When we visited in the fall around 8am it was not as crowded as the other temples and we really got to enjoy the site. It had beautiful gardens and architecture. The brochures are unfortunately in japanese only

I'm not sure why the title of this page says 'temple' because (from what I've read) Shoren-in was never a temple in the usual sense. It's more a villa for chief priests, etc. Consequently, it is vastly different from the massive or sprawling temples that...More

Loved sitting on tatami mats and enjoying the view of the garden. As with other temples in Japan, it's pricey as there's very little by way of education (no English signs) but it was a lovely setting and very quiet inside. Very few tourists.

This was within walking distance of our hotel so we left it to the next to last day of the trip. The temple was really a great treat; esthetic, balanced, serene and harmonious. I could have easily spent a half day here absorbing the wonderful...More

Very peaceful. We enjoyed the walk and wish it is not so hot and humid during our visit. The entrance fee is not that expensive and it's close to Arashiyama and not far from the train station.

Kinda of neat to see a virtual Forrest of bamboo. It’s a fairly easy walk and not so crowded. Well wort the effort to visit if you are in Kyoto. Lots to see in Kyoto so put this one on your list.

This was our first temple in Kyoto and completely amazing. The temple is less crowded than the rest in the area and is completely worth the visit. The garden is peaceful and quiet, the greens are beautiful with their reflexion in the pond.
