If you need an escape from the noisy Gion streets, this temple is perfect for you. Beginning with the front gate, those 300 yrs green trees kept telling the tales of ancient Kyoto. When getting inside, those colorful lovely painting of lotus on the doors...More

The gardens make this temple stand out from some of the others. Minimal or no crowds as we mostly had the place to ourselves.

The gardens are gorgeous and the fact that most tourist buses will not stop at this little place makes it so much more special. Also, pay attention to the gorgeous silk screens inside the building. Yet another amazing Japanese garden not to be missed!

One of our favorite temples in Kyoto due to the peaceful nature and somehow free of crowds. Beautiful temple and tranquil gardens to escape the heat and the crowds. Would be a lovely place to stop for tea- ask at desk when you pay your...More

We visited the Shoren-in temple at night. We kept looking for the temple and walked quite a distance to reach there. All through the walk , we kept wondering if the walk was futile and we should change our plan and head to dinner directly....More

Breath of fresh air after all the extremely crowded temples. Great house set in a beautiful garden. Plenty of other visitors, yet nowhere near as crowded as other temples, providing plenty of time to sit down and enjoy the scenery.

We arrived just after the temple was opened for the day and it was fantastic. As we were the only ones there, the temple was very quiet and peaceful. All the doors/windows were open so it was cold, lightly snowing even, but that just added...More

Lots of temples to see in Kyoto and Japan, but this was a lovely one. Quiet, peaceful. Several rooms to explore--not a long visit, but nice nonetheless

It was recommended by Lonely Planet and so worth it. Small hidden gem. It is a quiet place with many Japanese buildings with sliding doors, tatami mats and views on the beautiful garden and ponds. One of my favourite places so far!
