I strongly recommended that if your intention of visiting Kyoto is to see the Autumn Maple leaves, the Tofukuji Temple should be high in your priority. The surrounding of the temple is bursting with yellow and red colours of maple leaves and you would probably hate to leave the place as there are so many photo opportunities. The temple itself... We visited the temple at the peak of the fall foliage. It was beautiful, and there must have been tens of thousands of people. The staff kept the flow moving nicely, but there was no opportunity to sit and enjoy or take the most spectacular photos from the bridges.

Unfortunately, because it is so popular, it was crowded with people coming to see the momiji (autumn colour ) I have to say that it is the best place to see the colour. It has also 2 temples to visit. One with dry garden, and a very impressive moss garden.

Most famous place of Kyoto, such as red・yellow leaves in Autumn. It is not exaggerated, much of peoples come to this Temple pour in to see Leaves. Especially, good views from on the two bridges. I should think so you are stand in need of patience. Another season is quiet Temples.

Visited the place on 25 Nov 2016. A bit disappointing as the autumn foliage was not as good as expected. Even though, the report still stated it as peak, I personally think that it was slightly off peak. I could still take some good photos at certain angles but was not "wowed" by the sceneries on site. I had seen... More

Arrived ten minutes before it opened but there was already a long line of people. Worth the wait to capture some beautiful photos but it was difficult to sit and relax. Would love to go back when it's empty. Definitely the best place in Kyoto to view the autumn foliage.

One of the best places to view autumn foliage during mid November. Almost all of the trees were red/orange, simply beautiful. Highly recommended

We took the train here from Kyoto Station. There is a JR line station about a 20 minute walk from the temple. The crowds were massive here as this is one of the prime fall foliage view sites in Kyoto. There were easily 10,000-15,000 people here. We paid two entry fees - one to get into the garden (okay -... This temple is a must see and is a great spot to see Autumn leaves. The temple is surrounded by beautiful view and offers a perfect background for photos. It is located in southeast of Kyoto and only a two-minute ride from Kyoto Train Station, on the way to Nara. Do take a walk in the cozy, small streets in... More

Tofukuji is one of the majestic old Zen temples of Kyoto and very beautiful in the fall, when I visited. However, be warned that everyone is aware of how majestic and beautiful it looks in the fall and time your visit accordingly, if you don't want to step over too many selfie sticks. It was very easy to get to... More

Staying in Southern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Southern Kyoto
Southern Kyoto has a reserved air. Though the Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's major tourist attractions, the surrounding nature, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines provide less-visited spaces for strolling and reflection. The Fushimi Inari Shrine itself is made up of 32,000 sub-shrines, and the mountain they are dotted across beckons hikers, picnickers, and lovers of the outdoors. Many of the mountain's off-set paths aren't frequented by tourists, and the mountain's serenity can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Southern Kyoto is the place to enjoy being outside, and to pay your respects to the ancient architecture and gods of the land that are celebrated here.
