I want to start off by saying that there is a difference between Toji-in Temple (this one) and Toji Temple (near Kyoto Station). Toji Temple has the tall pagoda and the flea market, this one is very small with a beautiful garden. Great place to walk around without any tourists so you can actually appreciate the zen. Great place off... More

There are several beautiful structures here including the 5 story pagoda, which is the highest in Japan. If you happen to want to see this using the hop-on, hop-off bus, you need to get here early. The last bus leaves from Toni-in at 10:06am, any time after that and you are on your own.

Toji-in is known for the tallest pagoda in Japan. It's easy to access from Kyoto station (about 10-15 minutes walking) and has several buildings and a Japanese garden that can be explored. It's worth the visit but there are other better options in Kyoto if your time is limited.

Toji-in Temple is maybe not as famous as Kinkakuji or Kiyomizudera. But in my opinion it is even more charming. As I visited in the morning, there are few tourists and I enjoyed the serenity of garden in a fresh air.

The immaculate gardens of Tojo in reveal the great skill and experience of Japanese Gardeners that lift gardening to an art form. You easily spend 3 hours contemplating the pond, bridges and planting, wandering along the path and up the steps to the two tea houses and exploring the temple buildings and discover the numerous water bowls.

Make sure you go into the buildings to see the lovely statues and interior decoration. Beautifully lit at night

If you are looking for less touristy temple in Kyoto, I would recommend Toji Temple. It is peaceful and beautiful, and you can take your time to appreciate each building or simply to sit down and relax. It is also walking distance to Kyoto train station.

This temple is surrounded in a beautiful garden and we were fascinated with The secret and mystic atmosphere which fulfilled the air. What a beautiful masterpiece of Japanese sacral architecture set into e well kept and beautiful garden with all sorts of flower arrangements and little ponds. And bridges And bushes fully in bloom- a scenery almost like in a... More

This is much less touristic than Kinkakuji or Ginkakuji but I absolutely loved it here. When we arrived were just the three of us. You actually can go into the temple and feel the temple. Garden is a piece of paradise on earth

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
