Yes it was very romantic and enchanting walking around these streets on misty nights. Lots of small restaurants with a diverse mix of cuisines.

Pontocho has a great selection of small bars and places to eat along a series of small alleyways. It was quite lively even on a Tuesday night - although has a little bit of a seedy element to it but was good for a night out.

On a clear night, thee is no place better than to stroll around then through Pontocho. People sitting out on decks overlooking the lovely river, all the beautiful lanterns lighting the way. It gets very crowded in Spring and Summer, so you need to be patient. It is not the cheapest place to eat, but you will find a good... More

Pontocho is a MUST see because it's so unique. The streets are narrow and quaint, with an endless amount of restaurants lining them. You have to eat somewhere on this street at least once while visiting Kyoto.

This was a very busy area both by day and night. There are numerous nightclubs - many of which require a large fee to enter, with over enthusiastic door men.

This place is a food and drinks haven as the entire street is restaurants after restaurants, pubs after pubs. The appeal for me is the traditional architecture and the way the whole place is given a modern interpretation. Unfortunately we had our dinner before arriving here.

Visited a few times, different restaurant each time. There are so many to choose from, quite a few have English menus. It has a nice atmosphere too, quiet but brimming with energy.

This is another lovely traditional area of Kyoto which is alive a night with all the restaurants and little narrow streets to wander through. Definitely worth mingling in and around this district.

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Pontocho
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
