Great place to spend a half day
Feb 2020
Beautiful museum and I strongly recommend it for the person that loves history or a family that would like to learn more about humanity!

Varied exhibitions
Feb 2020
seems some of the exhibits change often but they were all great. Some excellent ancient stone age stuff.

Terrific location....
Dec 2019
say, however - absolutely overcrowded when we visited and, even though I'm tall and can look over the majority of other visitors, it was still to busy to be any fun. Good location and great 36 Poets exhibition, however,

HARD TO RATE A NUSEUM THAT IS CLOSED
Nov 2019
I went out of my way to go to this museum unaware of its closure for renovations - to reopen March 2020. There was a special exhibit on the calligraphy of 36 poets pre-1000ad. There wasn't any English for explaining what the exhibit was about. I had a bad experience in my pursuit of this information and the management of the museum assured me they would check it out (she is the reason I didn't completely zero out the rating). It was an expensive exhibit and that bothered me that they even warned me no refunds when I bought the ticket. I may not have been the first person to have a bad experience. I give credit to the manager for cooling me off. Also very crowded with not the polite side of the local people.

Terrible, avoid at all costs. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
Nov 2019 • Solo
I had high hopes for the Kyoto National Museum, but found the experience a terrible waste of money and bordering on a scam. 1. Half of the buildings are closed, as the secondary building is being renovated. 2. The ticket price is expensive at approximately 1650 yen. 3. Half of the exhibition is dedicated to poets and scrolls, and shows some calligraphy on scrolls with little background information, which is uninteresting in the least. 4. I finished the museum in approximately 45 minutes. AVOID this museum at all costs until it is completely reopened and renovated. A horrible waste of money. Kyoto national museum should be ashamed with itself.

Uniquely Japanese experience
Nov 2019 • Couples
We rented the english audio tour equipment and for us that was key to enjoying the exhibit. There are descriptive texts in english in the museum, but they don't cover as much as the 35 minute audio tour material does.

The main gallery was closed so we saw a special exhibit on the The Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. It was unexpectedly fascinating to learn about how important poetry was in the classical Japanese court.

Very expensive ticket for special exhibition
Nov 2019 • Friends
The old museum is closed for restoration while the new wing is used. The environment is relaxing but the ticket for special exhibition is quite expensive, ¥1600. When the special exhibition is on show, no other exhibition will be arranged as well. This time the special exhibition is old Japanese poems so that we don’t know how to understand. If you are not the expert in their poem, not advised to buy ticket.

English explanations still way behind
Oct 2019 • Couples
I came here despite the fact that main building was on renovation, to see the beautiful exhibition on the 36 immortal poets. For me the big disappointment was the absence of any book of this exhibition in English, only Japanese. Maybe one day even Japanese will realize that tourists coming to Japan would like to understand their culture and keep a precious memory.

Limited Exhibits on Japanese History
Sep 2019
I love visiting museums when I first visit a city to get an overview of the history of the city or region that I'm in. That being said, I was a little disappointed in this attraction, but it is worth going. Admission to the museum is very reasonable and for 500Yen ($5.00), you can rent an audio tour that will provide you with an explanation of selected pieces in the museum. An emphasis is on the artistic history of Japan through different periods and the ceramic collection is extensive with smaller exhibits for painting and screens. It's right across the street from a major temple, so this can be a good 1st stop in Kyoto before going to other attractions in the city.

京都国立博物館, Kyōto Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan
Sep 2019
Last June we were in Kyoto the Museum was undergoing some renovation so this trip we make it a point to visit. Hot summer morning as we make our way from Tofukuji Sta here, about 10 mins of stroll.
From the entrance one enters to a Garden and the nearest would be Grand Meji-style building which is the Meiji Kotokan, venue for the museum's special exhibitions.
Do check out the interior architecture of this Special Exhibition Hall ; typical Meji-style with heavy European influence. Above the front entrance of the Special Exhibition Hall is a triangular pediment with carvings representing the Buddhist God. And the two figures near the top of the entrance are Bishukatsuma-ten and Gigei-ten!
It was the ICOM Meet in Kyoto and the Special exhibits were titled Masterworks of the KyotoNM ; Temple and Shrine treasures.
The Kyoto National Museum is really a mix of old and new, about might be the buildings itself… ; While the Special Exhibition Hall (the ex-Old Imperial Kyoto Museum) was completed in 1895, the newer Heisei Chishinkan Wing, a new permanent collections hall was only renovated/completed in 2014.
We next went over to the modern Heisei Chishinkan Wing. It was actually built on the former premise/grounds of the 400-year-old Hoko-ji Temple. Excavation work revealed this and there are references made so that visitors can appreciate well. Metal rings mark the original location of pillars from the temple's Gate and corridor too. .
The Wing contains the permanent exhibits; the art and culture of pre-modern Japan (immediate post-Meiji). They include Buddhist statues, Momoyama-Edo paintings, hand scrolls, ceramics, costumes and paintings and more. Here no photography is allowed.
We left after about 1.5 hours, just a little disappointed as we expected more. Still prefers the Ueno Tokyo National Museum or Kysuhu National Museum with their vast collection where we spent close to 3 hours .each 
