The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

Small Enclosure for Dolphins
Jan 2020
This aquarium has less to see than the Osaka one. However, they have a dolphin show called "La La Fin Circus". It was all in Japanese so it was hard for the kids to understand what they were talking about. We are also concerned about the dolphins being in such a small space. The entire aquarium is tiny. There's no room for the dolphin to enjoy space that they actually need.

The rest of the museum was partly closed for renovation. The jellyfish display was interesting and the african penguins were enjoyable too. But the entertainment was expensive compared to the time we could actually spend there.

The cafes were also expensive junk food style food. If you are heading to Osaka, you may want to skip this.

Expensive at first sight but good value for money
Nov 2019
We were a little alarmed by the admission fee (although I as a senior got a reduction) but in view of the whole experience, the price represented good value for money. This aquarium is big and has plenty of very big fishes including sharks and friendly manta rays. The latter you can actually stroke. As with so many modern zoos and plant collections, the emphasis is education on conservation and ecology. We were amazed to see a frogman in the big tank feeding the fish, caressing them and when a couple of mantas came up to seemingly protect him, this was an emotional moment. The small collection of jelly fish is a delight and the illumination makes them appear as living jewels. Not to be missed.

Out of the rain

Cool jelly fish display. I didn't love the dolphin show. Probably a language barrier since I don't speak Japanese. There was a huge aquarium with music playing that was relaxing to watch.

Poor Dolphins
Sep 2019
Those poor dolphins in that small pool. Some of them have clear signs of raking. It is quite sad that such a modern facility had such outdated views on dolphins

Worry about the sea creatures in very tight places
Oct 2018 • Solo
This place left me with sadness. The sea lions and penguins were in very tight, uncomfortable spaces. There were two sea lions in a very small container, almost like a display. I would very much like it, if the staff take the animals well being to heart.

One of the best aquariums we've seen.
May 2019 • Family
We've been to some impressive aquariums and this certainly ranks in the top 10 and probably in the top 5. A free seal show and dolphin show are included in the entry price. We saw sea life we've never seen before. At Kyoto Station take one of several buses that arrive at/depart from B3. The aquarium stop is also the same stop for the railway museum.

There seems to be no place to add this information so I'll add it here. When taking a train from Kyoto Station you'll find white triangles and circles with numbers. The train doors open at the triangles. Reserved sections of the train are clearly marked and if there is no marking it is open seating.

Taxis departing from Kyoto Station start their meter with 450 yen (slightly more than $4). We used taxi's often and found them reasonably priced. That said, we took four different taxis from Kyoto Station to our hotel and paid four different prices although the traffic congestion was always about the same. I have no idea why there was difference in price.

Bus fares in the city center are 230 for adults. You pay as you exit. Exact change is required and you can change notes to coins in a change machine by the driver. My wife was using Google Maps on her iPhone on the bus and this seemed to violate the "no phone" policy according to one elderly gentleman. That said, we often noticed people using their phones but certainly never experienced anyone speaking on the phone while on the bus.

Performing dolphins
Apr 2019 • Couples
The Kyoto aquarium is a good time killer when waiting to get to Kansei Airport in Osaka

It has a nice variety of animals specific to Japan and Kyoto. The large salamanders are particularly good to look at.

The reason for the average review is they put on dolphin performances, in a tank that is way too small for the animals.

I don't mind aquariums but don't like performing animals.

A Great half day visit
Apr 2019 • Couples
We went to the above on our last day in Kyoto, well worth the walk from our hotel, about half a mile from the station. Graet morning, dolphin show excellent, great value for money for young and old.

Nov 2018 • Family
Been in lot aquariums this is not bad .
It as everything so we didn't have kids but big kids or real kids love this place lots to see and the seals are entertaining penguins .
The penguins are plentiful and lots diversity in the tanks , entrance fee is low . But I think this rates pretty good its not in the megga scale but its 100% worth a visit you can eat inside if you forgot your food .
If you do have kids they will love it , if you dont have kids you will love it we did . passed few hours .
