This was a really great experience! My fiancé and I really enjoyed the activity. The reservations were easily made via email and I received a response in less than 24 hrs. The website is in English and easy to navigate. The shop is obscure but is on Takeyamachi (Google says Takeyacho). Heading South from the palace turn left onto Takeyamachi... More

My friend and I wanted to experience the cultural side of Kyoto without it getting too touristy. A makie introduction class was a perfect way to talk to one of the locals (the teacher was really kind and helpful!) and to try and get an understanding of a traditional japanese practise - plus it's a great souviner or perhaps a... My daughter and I are traveling Japan just to learn various crafts. We really enjoyed this class. I am not artistic by any means and people even laugh at my stick figures but I am very happy with the plate I made. It is well worth your time.

The teacher was extremely kind and nice, and even if her English is extremely limited we managed to get everything sorted out without problems. The lab is behind a small shop where you can find professionaly done items with the same technique (actually, in the workshop you will experience a simplified form of the whole process, streamlined and without having... My daughters were delighted to make their own souvenirs from Kyoto. Ms. Inui was very knowledgeable, kind, and accommodating. She patiently showed our daughters how to make beautiful and precious art work on lacquer pieces, using gold powder and mother of pearl. We brought back a piece of Kyoto with us. The experience was fantastic and memorable.

My wife and I spent an excellent time creating our own lacquer designs, which we then took home with us. The process was interesting and the results made perfect gifts for friends and family. Besides artistic merit, this is an excellent way to spent a couple of hours out of the rain or heat in central Kyoto.

Conveniently located and affordable price to enjoy an experience to understand and enjoy Japanese arts and crafts. Made my own beautiful Japanese lacquer design that I could share with my family after the trip. Run by a small family business which enables personable instructions. One of the best discoveries in Japan.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
