On my visit, the main, almost exclusive, exhibit was a collection of photographs. A quick glance at previous reviews suggests that this is the norm. The museum has several floors but a relatively small area on each. This is an advantage to those like myself who tire after an hour and a half of a museum visit. An hour here... More

We went based on the reviews which suggested there was a wide collection of photography. Actually, there were none, which makes me think the exhibitions change a lot, so make sure to check their web site before you go. Having said that, the show we saw was an excellent collection of Japanese ceramics. What was special was that they were... More

I made a special trip to this tiny museum based largely on the favorable TripAdvisor reviews. Maybe I picked a bad time to visit, but I enjoy contemporary art and after spending 45 minutes on public transit to get there and paying the 1000 Yen admission,I was in the museum about 10 minutes, and even that required lingering. By my... More

This is a small but attractive museum near several shrines and temples. This will take about an hour unless you are a truly devoted art lover.

If you happen to be in the area of Gion, take some time out to visit the Kahitsukan. I clicked the "visited in March 2013" button only because they don't offer a multiple visit option. I try to visit the Kahitsukan every year when I return to Japan because they have one of the finest collections of photographs by Henri... More

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
