This is a must if you're in Kyoto. I think Gion is the most beautiful area in all of Japan and so having someone to tell you of its history and tradition is a great addition. Mei gave our tour and she is incredibly knowledgeable, interesting and funny. I'd put this on your itinerary for your first night in Kyoto!... More

First of all, I can't say enough good about the daytime tour or our guide. We only had two days in Kyoto and this was an excellent way to see Kyoto life outside the tourist attractions and hear the background history while you're at it! The only negative was finding the meeting place. It is on the east side of... More

We did the Gion tour and loved learning about meiko and geiko in Kyoto. Mia was the most amazing guide - knowledgeable and a great story teller who could really bring everything to life. She also have a wonderful sense of humour and the tour passed incredibly quickly. Highly recommended.

we thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Yuki and got to see several geishas. Learnt a lot about the culture and was so well worth the the bargain price of 1000 yen. Yuki had excellent English.

I took this night-time Geisha tour of Gion upon arriving in Kyoto about two weeks ago. This tour took you through the Gion district and outside important sites of cultural geisha significance (various teahouses, geisha houses, etc.) While the tour was informative (and the guide very knowledgeable), I found it to be very boring, focusing mainly on pictures from a... We did the 5 hour walking tour. Walking was easy and our guide gave us good insights into life in Kyoto as well as pointing out a heap of things we hadn't noticed on our own unguided walks. For 2000 yen I reckon this is a good value tour.

I just completed this night walking tour and can't speak highly enough about it. Great guide with great English ability and full of information about Geiko and Maiko life. I travel extensively and am pretty skeptical about group tours -- this one was great value and absolutely a fascinating fun learning experience. Go!

Decided to go on the walking tour of Gion in Kyoto and was not disappointed. Mia was the guide. She was very informative and funny. The close to two hour tour went by in a breeze. Wish it was even longer actually. Very atmospheric and we were fortunate to see a few Geiko and Maiko. Definitely recommend.

Tbh, given the cost of this tour, I was expecting this to be sub-standard. However our guide Mia was brilliant. Her English was excellent, her knowledge was A1, she had a good sense of humour and was very happy to answer any questions. Highly recommended.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
