This shrine was built in 1895 in celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the founding of the city of Kyoto. Admission is free but there is a small fee for entrance to the gardens, which are home to several beautiful weeping cherry trees which are in bloom during the spring months.

Such a nice place. The red and white of the shrine complex are really eye catching, and make for cool pictures. I recommend nature appreciators to take the trip (with entrance fee) into the gardens. They are as beautiful and impressive on a rainy autumn...More

It wasn't crowded when we visited the large temple grounds. More people were found in the gardens, which also covered a large area. Flowers, trees and shrubs, water and a bridge provided many outstanding views.

The temple was impressive however we really came here to see the gardens at the recommendation of the owner of Hotel Mume. The gardens are extensive and range from interesting to beautiful. Well worth a visit.

Beautiful place to visit in Kyoto. Took a tour that included about an hour stay at the shrine and the surrounding grounds. We went in April. The weather was nice and the sakura (cherry blossoms) were in full bloom. Many great photo ops.

City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its
blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered
shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street
bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to
peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home
goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center
is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and
clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of
