Good place to visit and best is to buy the tickets for visiting the internal temple and external garden area together. More for photo takings and I feel that best timing to come here is winter although the timing I came here hasn't got snow. Another thing I like the best is the temple toilet. I think I went to... This place was transcendent, peaceful and scenic. I'm not sure if it would be as nice on a weekend or in summer, but very few people were evident and much of our walking was with only our family. Perhaps the admission price keeps the free loving bamboo walkers at bay. We entered this temple at the top entrance after walking... More

We stopped by here when we were in Arashiyama while walking up and down the road. Inside you can see other small restaurants that will serve up a quick meal before seeing the temple. Or you can walk straight down to the temple and go inside. There was a couple cherry blossom trees that bloomed early, so that make the... More

The temple was completely overshadowed by the bamboo grove which completely blew me away. Hopefully you'll get there on a sunny day and enjoy some amazing photo opportunities. The street close to the temple entrance has some very interesting shops to explore. Plan to be here for at least three hours.

Chances are you rarely seen this temple ranked on the top ten must visit place in Kyoto. But trust me, this is easily even on the top five if not on the same level as Kinkakuji, Fushimi Inari, and Kiyomizudera. The photos you saw all over the net can not even accurately describe the beauty of this garden. I never... More

Aside from thinking of the age of this garden, we found it to be unspectacular. The lake and garden at Kinkaku-ji in our opinion was better. Visiting gardens in winter is obviously not ideal.... Maybe this garden has more impact in other seasons.

My wife and I walked around the Tenryuji grounds taking in the incredible landscape. While the buildings were impressive as well, I am the least qualified to speak about them or their significance. However, simply enjoying the immaculate grounds was enough for us and made the modest entrance fee worth it. This temple abuts the bamboo forest so can be... More

Tenryugi Temple has some lovely buildings, but for me, the grounds--the exquisitely landscaped grounds--were the overriding attraction. Meticulously maintained, gloriously green and serene; a new wonder appears around every bend in the path. A fascinating mushroom sprouts in the moss, a pool of water is framed by maples, a flower peeks from under a tree...it is all so beautiful. Wander... More

What a beautiful temple - make sure you check out the garden (costs) but totally worth it. Even in winter, this place was so picturesque, I can only imagine in Spring/Autumn.

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
