About
2-minute walk from JR Motomachi Station. It is a shopping street, formed in 1874, where you can feel Kobe the most. If you stand right in front of "La Luce," the beautiful stained glass arch that is a gate to Motomachi 1st street, you will be able to see Mount Rokko in the north and feel, from the south, the refreshing wind that Meriken Wharf brings. There are a lot of long-established stores that have been founded more than 50 years ago, such as kimono shops that sell kimono, yukata (informal cotton kimono), etc., bag shops, and coffee shops where you can relax comfortably.

We were at the Chinatown nearby and came by here as the rain got heavier. It was past 6pm, the sky were dark but the place was still quite "empty" though over time, it got more crowds, possibly due to the after work hours.

Just like many shopping streets in Japan, this shopping street is covered and so you will not need to worry about rain or shine and can walk leisurely at your comfort pace. And many shops are located on both sides of the street and many are selling products related to fashion, bags, shoes, gifts and souvenirs, pharmacies, cafes and restaurants, just to mention a few. It stretched/cut through over a few small lanes and offered shoppers quite a lot to see and shop. (and we ended buying quite a lot of things here as prices were reasonable and product quality not bad)

There are also benches all over the place that allow shoppers to take a rest which is a great gesture. However, there are no "visible" washrooms around (at least we didn't see any directional signs of washrooms). In the end, we entered a small shopping center and used the washrooms there. Possibly there are but we didn't find them?

If you are in the area and would like to experience a shopping street culture and local lifestyle, this place is a good place to be in!

It is divided into 4 or 5 sections with road that separates the sections. Great place to shop and eat.

Plenty of open air shopping. Food restaurants available also. 100s of shops. Easy walking. Fun and no hassles. Downtown central adjacent to Chinatown.

Took the subway from Shin Kobe to Sannomiya Station, one stop away. Then took JR line to Motomachi. As in all China towns, we came across many China town gates. There are many shops at the Chinatown shopping gallery. There are many restaurants to get Chinese food. Simply awesome , authentic Chinese food. There are also many shops selling Chinese goods. After this, we went to visit Meriken Park and Kobe Port Tower.

This street was pretty boring as compared with the Kyoto’s Nishiki Shopping district.

However, this is still worth to visit for their infamous Kobe Beef which taste superb.

You can find most things on Motomachi Shopping street. You can get a suit, massage, lunch and shoes. The street is long and the best part is that it is covered so you can escape the heat or the rain. There is a lot of variety along this historic shopping street and not a bad place to window shop either.

Nice row of shops to visit. All covered so good for any weather.

Chinatown runs parallel, offering great street food breaks.

I came across this shopping street after strolling through nearby Chinatown. There’s a mix of traditional and modern stores. I stopped to buy donuts.
As it’s a covered street it would be a good option on a rainy day.
