Travelers who have read Maria Volkonsky's Princess of Siberia will enjoy visiting this museum. Maria followed her husband to Siberia as an exile too. The book and a visit to this house bring history to life.

Visited this place with local guide. Everything was well preserved and could see the Young Volkonsky and his wife. During December uprising in 1825 in Russia young military offices were arrested and some were exiled to Siberia for 30 years. Tour guide explained us the full story of December uprising in Russia in 1825 and family story of Vlokonsky and... More

This museum is worth the walk. The house is really well laid out and you can walk through and get a real sense of the time and place, They have cards in English if you need them and these explain the people and the exhibits. Nicely preserved house belonging to the Decembrists' after they were exiled to Siberia from Moscow for attempting to rise up and assassinate / remove the Russian Tsar. They were predominantly youngish but senior Russian military officers who after seeing liberal French policies in Paris (which they had captured after defeating Napoleon) were inspired to remove the Tsar and likewise liberalise... Exquisitely preserved house and belongings of the Russian 'Decembrists' who lead the revolt against and emperor and were exiled to Irkutsk. They created an intellectual society with the support of brave women who followed the Russian noblemen to exile in Siberia

Most things about Volkonsky House have already been said on here, but I thought I'd add one important aspect: Even if you don't speak Russian and don't know much about Russian history, it is still worth a visit. You can tell that a lot of thought has gone into how to present the house and its exhibits and make the... More

We visited this museum with our kids. In this house-museum you can see how do the Decembrists lived in the past years. It's good to see that but it is not such an unforgettable memory. The woman that follow you inside the building insist that you read every printed information for each room you visit.

This is one of the most incredible museums I have ever visited in my life! It was so quaint and simple and yet brought the Decembrists and their lives so vividly to life. Topping off wonderfully by the musical recital and reception at the end. Truly a warm Siberian experience.
