We were on a group tour, and one evening was reserved for a performance of Cinderella, at this theatre. If you have to see ballet once in your life, you might as well see it here. Grand building indeed. Incidentally, photos are OK till the start of the performance. In fact, the place is really photogenic, and I would strongly urge photo buffs to come really early to get plenty of shots. Once it starts, no photos and no videos! If you have binoculars, take them with you. This is one place a good pair of binoculars would come in handy!

I love 'Le Corsaire'! I've seen various productions in various theatres, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that in the long run it made me into a ballet addict :)
This one in Mariinsky is special, it comes out in difficult times, and indeed it helps to retain one' clear mind and steady heart. The ballet is joyful, picturesque and very much appreciated by the audience.
The dancers, too, seem to be absolutely infatuated and absorbed in their parts. And, unlike many other classical ballets with a leading pair and the corps de ballet, they have here half a dozen important characters.
Another unusual trait – most classical ballets are about girls in white tutus, but 'Le Corsaire' has a fare share of male dancing. Obviously - the pirates, you know! And while all the 'good guys' were predictably faultless, my heart went to the sly Lankedem. He was dancing with such a devotion, precision and might that it was nearly impossible for the audience to stay in their chairs, everyone just wanted to rush to the stage and join the ball!
With good luck you can catch this ballet in the middle of May, when they will have the 'White Nights' Festival.
Keep in mind that, like most other ballets, it's the 'new' Mariinsky, right opposite the old one. Not the same atmosphere, it's true, but much better facilities.
And, though it's difficult to plan anything now, booking in advance still is a good idea.

The amazing beauty of the theatre, the perfection of the Mariinsky ballet; I loved every single second of the evening.
Speaking no Russian at all, (ticket is in Russian) I was just wondering around, untill I asked a nice wardrobe lady who explained in part Russian, part English, part sign language where I was supposed to go. Not a problem.
An evening at the Mariinsky is not the cheapest, (food and drinks, ticketprice) but it was an excellent experience that was a definite highlight of my St. Petersburg trip.
Highly recommended.

Not to be missed. Get a seat in the Tsar’s box for a full experience. The stage is magnificent. I have watched some of the best dancers in the world here.

A phenomenal experience in the Mariinsky Theatre. We went to see the Giselle - which is a classic ballet. It was spectacular. We were a bit unsure about the dress code as it was a last minute decision and we didn't pack accordingly, but we were just fine with a smrat(ish) casual wear. Some people turned up in suits, some in jeans but I seriously wouldn't stress about it.

As for the performance - it was amazing! I was initially a bit against it but my partner managed to persuade me and I am very happy we went. If you are in St. Petersburg and have time for an evening performance I would definitely recommend.

We were lucky and got 2 remaining tickets for Verdi's AIDA on December 28th.
Beautiful opera house with great acoustics. The "old" opera house alone is worth a visit. Unfortunately we could not visit the "Zar lodge".

The performance was staged great. The stage design was also impressive.

It was such a pleasure to watch the play in Mariynskiy theatre. The building itself in an old styled theatre with awesome architecture, it can amaze you with it’s beauty and scale. Also the plays here are as much delightful as you can imagine. Actor are like really living through their roles. It’s the place you must to see!

The group I was part of had tickets for The Nutcracker Ballet, a Tchaikovsky masterpiece. We were in the front row of boxes on an upper floor with a fantastic view of the stage. This is one of the world’s greatest ballet theatres and is the most wonderful place to stage a ballet. The only drawback is that the seats were not very comfortable.

The original theatre has buses and taxis there plus ability to place wheelchair.

Acoustics in this old theatre are brilliant. The orchestra and appreciation to the music from audience is a true accreditation to Russia.

Tickets for the Nutcracker are only available a short time before, day one month, from the theatre online.

The building is full of stairs. If in wheelchair sit on base level. No lifts that I saw. Building is in original format. It’s warm inside theatre.

Cloak room on each level. Seats are old single chairs with limited space between so please put jackets in cloakroom.

Staff are located around that are really helpful. If they do not speak English they show you to look at the floor level written in Russian, then tell you how or point to your floor and door. Door staff could speak English ok. It’s our issue if we can’t speak another countries language we are in.

Food and drink prices were good. Buy your souvenirs at intervals because the shop closes before the end. We had 3 intervals.

Toilets on each level.

Beware ceiling heights as they drop and rise frequently.

Tickets and views: sitting beside the royal box does have obstructed views from frat 2-3 seats. Obstruction is ornamental Goulding from side of box.
Sitting front roe of each level is best to avoid heads in way.
Seats on side require your head to turn as you are not front on (obvious I know).

Ballet performing is rated highly in the world. I was told I saw second world class ballet, first is Bolshoi.

I would go again, the theatre alone was awe inspiring, the ballet amazing, orchestra brilliant.

P.S. I walked from central St Petersburg to the theatre. It took approximately 30 minutes along scenic waterfront.
