The Sergei Kirov Museum is one of the most unique monuments of the Stalin epoch. From the 1926 to 1934, Kirov headed the Leningrad Communist Party organization. He was Stalin's closest friend and associate. His tragic dead, the circumstances of which remain unknown to this day, triggered the bloodiest round of Stalin's terror and repression. From 1926 to 1934, Kirov lived in apartment No20, 26/28 Kamennoostrovsky Prospect. In March of 1955, it was made into his museum. Simultaneously, three apartments were turned over for exhibition purposes. Kirov's memorial five-room flat is remarkable for its collection of authentic personal belongings and almost entirely intact interior elements. Visitors included: Stalin, Bukharin, Kuibyshev, Orjonikidze, and Voroshilov. The apartment offers the chance to learn about daily life of a Party leader of the 1920-30s. There are the gift presented by Leningrad workers during the first Five-Year Plan, the speeches of Kirov and other Party leaders from Stalin's circle, and Kirov's personal music collection. This place is where a very high-ranking communist officer, Kirov, lived between the revolution of 1917 and his death during the years of Stalin. The museum is located at a 10 minutes walking distance north of Gorkovskaja metro station, in the same district of Peter and Paul fortress, the museum of artillery, the museum of the history of politics, and... The Kirov museum was difficult to find, we walked past it a couple of times because there was a small red sign in Russian. Once inside the building take the lift there's a sign saying which floor. We were greeted by two helpful older ladies who spoke good English. The admission was 100rub for students. The ladies directed us to... More

Kirov was Stalin's right hand man, but was assassinated by Stalin who then blamed it on his rivals and unleashed a terror campaign which resulted in many being sent to the Gulag. The experience of his Soviet era apartment begins when you enter the building, into a cavernous vestibule complete with old style wiring, ancient lift, drab walls. Upstairs, like... More

We recommend visiting this apartment together with the yelizarov museum which is in the same area. You get to see two very different living spaces from around the same era. This one has English information cards for each room. Warning if you don't like stuffed animals. Unfortunately this guy was a prolific hunter hence the numerous trophies. Alot of books... More

Highly recommended , Sergei Kirov ( Leningrad Party Boss ) lived here for 10 years until his murder in 1934 in the Smolny Institute, ( at Stalins order ? ) His death precipitated the Great Purge & the deaths of millions. You get the lift to the 5th floor , the staff are very friendly & helpful ; Kirov certainly... More

This apartment was off the beaten path. So far off the path that its entrance was a normal apartment complex entrance. Of course at first sight of the entrance you would want to venture far away, but this strange apartment complex is one of the many things that will make you remember that this is where this man used to... while most Russians were starving and living in abject poverty. The man was a bolshevik through and through and a very close friend of Stalin who had him murdered in 1934 then proceeded to have a few million more murdered during the Great Purge. The fascinating thing is how ludicrously (and horribly) petit-bourgeois the apartment is: expensive rugs, bear skins,... More

If you are in St. Petersburg and you want a true historic museum of a piece of Russia's history, this is worth a visit. It is the apartment of Kirov, preserved exactly in the manner of when he was working in the leadership of the revolution. You can see his working office, living quarters, etc. Lots of historic photos and... More

This is the St Petersburg Communist Chief's (1926-34) apartment and it feels like he just walked out -- everything is there as it would have been. An interesting illustration that the "gauche caviar" is not a French invention -- the top brass certainly had a better life than the masses! Friendly museum managed by a group of friendly ladies (all... More

In St. Petersburg in July 2013, I had the opportunity to visit the Sergei Kirov Apartment Museum. It is not normally one of the places tourists from a cruise ship would normally visit, but I was fortunate to be in the guiding hands of Tatiana (Russian Adventures). When we prepared the itinerary for this -- my second visit to St.... More
