The General Staff Building, part of the vast Hermitage complex, is located across Palace Square opposite the Winter Palace. You will immediately notice the grand façade as the west and east wings are joined by a tripartite crowned with a sculpture of the Goddess of Glory in her Chariot of Victory. We visited to see the Impressionist collection (moved here... More

We visited this museum right after visiting the Hermitage. The ticket price is low. It has a lot of paintings of the XIX and XX century. These are in addition to many masterpieces not as well known outside of Russia due to restrictions during the Soviet era. The interior is modern, bright and spacious. A wonderful modern gallery in a... More

I arrived in the night, and s my friend drove me around I could not help it being impressed with the way the buildings are lighted in the night. I even wrote mu withe that, in the night, this was the nicest city I have ever seen. People wise, there is a huge difference between those here and those in... More

If you are in St. Petersburg it is highly recommended to visit the new branch of the Hermitage - the so called General Staff Building. It is situated just across Dvortsovaya Square opposite the Hermitage. The building itself is a magnificent creation of architect Rossi in 1820. In the 19-th century it housed not only the military General Staff but... More

it has been converted into yet another museum to handle the overflow from the Hermitage. I have never seen so many Picassos and other French Impressionists ever before. It was another staggering venue.

If you come to St. Petersburg, you should definitely visit the new branch of the Hermitage General Building. Here on the fourth floor you will find a room of Monet, Renoir, two halls, 8 Van Gogh paintings, four rooms of Picasso and three of Matisse. Everything is fantastically exhibited. And the building itself is worthy of any architecture lover.

Great impressionist collection, need far more time to explore the many galleries. Lovely, and not crowded in winter

After visiting the hermitage, this museum across the square is disappointing. Mainly comprising art galleries. An unusual exhibit " Raining cats and dogs" actually has real stuffed cats and dogs hanging on ropes. Macabre!
