It is a modern art gallery, you won't find gilded stuff there. That's fine with me, because I am more of a contemporary art kind of person. And the place amazed me with the number of impessionist pieces. Highly recommend!

The General Staff Building is part of the Hermitage complex and contains 19th & 20th century art, including Degas, Renoir, etc. Allow most of a day to see the collection.

It caught us by surprise that the Hermitage Museum has such an extensive collection of modern and contemporary art, and they are all hidden in the General Staff Building! Many people would only visit the main building, which we went and were an eye opener....More
