A wonderful memorial sign. Established in 2003 in honor of the founding of the city, port and customs office. It is a horizontal bronze bas-relief placed on a granite base. The bas-relief depicts buildings and structures that historically housed the customs services of St. Petersburg. The memorial sign is beautiful, very well executed in relief. The information is easy to read.

If you are located in the Historic Heart of the city, Strelka is a short walk accross Palace bridge which is beside The Hermitage.
Strelka is located on Vasilyevsky Island and is one of the oldest parts of the city, tourists often wander through Strelka to get to the Peter & Paul fortress which is a 10 minute walk away.
Strelke is famous for it's Rostrell Columns and some museums, however the main highlight is the views. Great photo opportunities for pictures of the riverbank buildings, The Hermitage & Peter & Paul Fortress. You have to come at different times of the day as the sun is blinding against the river and can ruin photo's, the afternoon is best.
We found two very impressive restaurants close by, a high end restaurant named Restoran serving modern Russian and traditional European dishes with an extensive wine list and Grad Petrov a German bar with excellent meat dishes and beer.

Strelka is the Russian word for “point of an arrow”. This area, which is in fact the eastern point of the city’s biggest island, Vasilievsky Island, had been St Petersburg’s main harbor until the mid-19th century. It is one of the best-known sights in the city. Walk across Palace Bridge to get there from the Hermitage.

Strelka is famous for the two red Rostral Columns decorated with prows of ancient Swedish ships. These columns, originally put up as memorials of Russia’s victory over Sweden in the Northern War, were apparently used as light houses in old days. Nowadays you will see numerous wedding parties laying flowers at the columns and having their pictures taken in this beautiful area.

Strelka has a few museums, the Naval Museum (with models of about 1,500 Russian battleships) and the world’s biggest Zoological Museum being the most famous ones. The Naval Museum building used to house the Stock Exchange when the port was there, and the Zoological Museum is in a former warehouse.

But the main reason why Strelka is a must go site is the best panoramic view of St Petersburg, which you can see from there. Make sure you take a picture of the four 18th-century Hermitage buildings across the Neva, and of the Peter & Paul Fortress, the city’s historical center. The best time for the pictures is the afternoon: In the morning, you have to take them against the sun, and you are more likely to see the wedding parties in the afternoon.

Go there to get a good look at the Embankment across the Neva, and to see the Rostral Columns. There is a small monument at the forward edge of the Strelka , and visitors flip coins into it, using it as a "wishing well" of sorts. Adjoining the Strelka is the Naval History Museum.

This is a kind of a functional center of the city. It is in the transportation center, the two biggest branches of Neva river start here; there are many museums around, the home of the St. Petersburg University is also close.

You cross the Neva River to get to this island or land spit, it gives you a great view of the Peter and Paul Fortress, you can walk past the Rostral Column along the pathway to the other column and take pics. at all the different angles, it also gives you a good view of the river and buildings both ways, perfect for pics.

This spot DOES provide a good view of the river and St.P across the river. But not so convenient to reach. IF you plan on taking a canal boat ride, the boat will come out to approximately the same place so you can enjoy the changing view in comfort.

This scenic look-off gives you a really nice panorama of St. Petersburg, from across the water. Many of the main city sites are there, waiting for your photo opp. Don't believe me? When we were there (for just a 20 minute stop), three different wedding parties stopped by to have their photos taken there, with the lovely background. If the backdrop is good enough for wedding pictures, then you know it's worth checking out.

Enjoy the Neva River and have a different way to see the city, the Peter and Paul Fortress, the towers of the churches, the colossal winter palace and the both Kronstadt lightcolumns.
