I was expecting more impressive rooms but there is mostly one (the one you see on most photos). The rest is filled with art and random exhibitions. Nice place but it should not be a priority considering the calibre of the other places around.

We stumbled upon a very interesting exhibition of modern Russian art in the marble palace. Exquisite location and friendly service. Check it out.

A very interesting palace - if you are interested in the rooms and the architecture there are several rooms dedicated to that. A significant part of the museum is also dedicated to modern art.

In a city like this, you get spoiled for a choice when it comes to the palaces to visit.
This one is right on the riverbank and is really grand.

The Marble Palace is one of the first Neoclassical palaces in Saint Petersburg. It's not as grand as other palaces in St. Petersburg, but definitely worth a little time spent there. No mistake - it is impressive. It was a lavish gift from Catherine the Great to her lover and the most expensive palace in St. Petersburg at the time of its construction between 1768-1785.

We visited here on a wet afternoon, not expecting too much, and were very pleasantly surprised. The Marble Hall wasn't particularly to my taste but the other classically decorated rooms were beautiful and the attendants were extremely helpful and proud of what they had, constantly handing us information sheets in English which we might have missed, when they saw we were interested in the paintings and furniture. We also enjoyed the Ludwig collection of modern art housed in the building and there's a good small shop in the basement

Comparing to other places of St Petersburg this one is definitely not as exciting, though they do have some good exhibitions there.

Marble Palace was built by Catherine for one of her lovers. Part is historic rooms and part exhibition space. We saw one about children in Soviet Art. There were paintings, statues and posters of both the good and the bad. It was very moving at times. Manageable in size.

This one was unfortunately already closed for the day by the time I reached it (having already spent pretty much the whole day in the Hermitage and its associated museums). And os I had to be content with just admiring the exterior. It's another nice looking palace, similar in style to others you see in St Petersburg.
