Alexander Column dedicated to Tsar Alexander I is a very tall red granite pillar in the middle of Dvortsovaya Square by the Hermitage. There is a bronze angel on the top.

The Alexander Column is located at the centre of the Palace Square in between the Winter Palace (Hermitage) and the General Staff Building. It's visible from anywhere in the square. But it's quite tall, in excess of 20 metres, and as result it's not so...More

An imposing structure in the middle of the square, impressing, it commemorates the Russian victory over Napoleon, the irony is that it was designed by a French designer!!! I guess he was not fond of Napoleon...

At the top of this tall column is an angel holding a cross. The face of the angel is rumored to be that of Alexander I and that would have been great to have had a glimpse. Alex I was raised by Catherine the Great...More

As you are standing in Palace Square and admiring the Winter Palace, take a look the focal point of the square, the Alexander Column. The monument was raised to commemorate Russia's victory over Napoleon. It is named for the Emperor at the time, Alexander I.

The other reviews give the statistics, so just dwell on the fact that nothing except gravity is keeping it there..............amazing!

Really impressive, with a great story behind it. Made out of one single granite and has no foundation. Stands there pure with help of gravity. There is no problem for that as St Petersburg does not have earthquakes.
