The Arts Square in St. Petersburg is famous by the fact, that here are situated many renown cultural institutions, like museums, opera and ballet house, palaces, museum-houses of some writers, as for instance of Iosif Brodsky and some others. Among these art buildings especially distinguishes the State Russian Museum, formerly known as Russian Museum of His Imperial Majesty Alexander III.This... More

Beautiful museum, but especially the Kandinsky exhibition was spectacular. We had a guided tour, in Russian, but I was lucky that one of my colleagues could simultaneous translate. The guide was real knowledgeable and informative.

Visited here on the third Thursday of the month when by chance it had free admission. This meant a queue to get in but it was well worth the wait. Some beautiful works of art over several floors

This was a very large and nice museum. I visited here in October 2016. Although this would not be on my list of top 5 places to visit in St Petersburg it is very nice if you have time.

We knew nothing about Russian art. Of course we thought that this cultural town must have had something worthy to look at! Our local guide told us about the museum and how to get there. It is very easy – the museum is located very close to Nevsky prospect on a beautiful square with a mall garden. It is an... More

Quite a contrast with the Hermitage, relaxed, helpful staff and an attractive cafe. We concentrated on the excellent and beautifully displayed collection of icons then moved on to the extraordinary galleries of Russian folk art. (Don't be confused, as we were, this is not the collection of the Russian Ethnographic Museum which is in a separate building next door which... More

Judging by the traffic, it doesn't get as much attention as the Hermitage, but it's a must-see place if you're in Saint Petersburg. It's also not as crazy-mazy as the Hermitage. They've got lots of beautiful Russian art pieces from different periods and run temporary exhibitions too (I had the chance to see Kandkisnky). However, the beauty of many pieces,... More

Watching russian art you understand a little bit more the long history of this country. Realism with examples as Repin. Outstanding vanguard collection with Rodshenko and Malievitch examples. Examples of the unknown, at least for me, Sovietic art. Another feeling you get when you visit this museum is that you are more surrounded by locals than by tourists.

The State Russian Museum was well worth the visit. It is housed in a rambling palace that makes for some unexpected dead-ends and backtracking, but the experience of the whole is lovely. Their collection of early 20th century Russian avant-garde art is most enjoyable and especially worth the visit. The collection as a whole however covers a vast history of... More
