This whole museum is devoted to Russian Art. We spent most our time looking at the Iconography and early Russian Art, although the museum also has modern art.

This museum is all about Russian art from medieval icons, through all ages and well into the 20th century and the soviet period. The collection is of the same kind of the Tretyakov and Tretyakovsky galleries in Moscow, but on a smaller scale, possibly easier to digest. Besides the paintings an portraits, there are also sculptures and items of craftsmanship... More

Amazing collection of Russian XIX century art, with paintings by Ge, Aivazovsky, Kramskoy and Vereshchagin. Also Vrubel's and Rerih's paintings are exhibited. Friendly staff, short queues (Thursday).

This the perfect foil to the Hermitage. Three palaces have been joined together to make one enormous museum, which traces the history of Russia through the ages. Unlike the Hermitage, this museum has pictures of Russia, and statues and sculptures of the many facets of Russian life. This was one fascinating museum and we loved it.

We were very interested in visiting the Russian Museum after the Hermitage. We, somehow, did the museum backwards, so make sure you are entering through the palace portion to work through the exhibits chronologically. Filonov was the most outstanding works I saw in the museum.

Russian art through the ages displayed nicely and with not too many crowds. The Avianskiy exhibition was more crowded and was an extra charge. Not far from church of the Saviour of the Spilt Blood.

This museum has wonderful galleries. I had to pay twice as much admission as a non-Russian. I was with my Russian girlfriend. They accused her of being a non-Russian. Not my first trip to Russia. Anti-American sentiment is unbelievably high in Saint Petersburg at this time. Advise if you are an American to wait a couple of months to go... More

Went to this museum to learn about the siege of lLeningrad. However, they are lacking annaudio guide of the exhibit. The workers were very friendly and supplied us with a loose leaf containing explanations in English regarding the various rooms however all items on display were on Rusiian only so it was a bit difficult to really understand.
