About
Built to memorialize Alexander II following his assassination in 1881, this magnificent church with Italian pink marble floors and numerous mosaics was modeled after 16th and 17th century churches, contrasting sharply with the prevailing architectural styles.

- АлсуMoscow, Russia8 contributionsDizzying atmosphereA wonderful Orthodox church. The size of the icons and paintings is amazing, it’s amazing... The guides conduct a leisurely tour, it’s amazingly interesting, they listened to every word. Very conveniently, the ticket can be purchased at the terminal, bypassing the long line at the ticket office. It is impossible to give less than 5 stars to an attraction that the whole world knows. We will definitely visit again this year.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 February 2024
- olegkrylovUfa, Russia20,665 contributionsSuper site! The Church of the Savior on Blood soars its polychrome onion domes on the very spot where Tsar Alexander II, to whom it is dedicated, was assassinated in 1881. Built in neo-Russian style, modeled after St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, it boasts glittering decor of mosaics, jasper and semi-precious stones, covering almost 7,000 m2. The courtyard is entered through a magnificent Art Nouveau gate designed by Alfred Parland, the cathedral's architect.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 March 2024
- Talib JBaku, Azerbaijan444 contributionsThe majestic cathedral both outside and inside. This temple from the outside reminded me of Moscow's St. Basil's Cathedral (Pokrovsky Cathedral). I don’t know who the architects of these cathedrals are, but they created a masterpiece. When I was in St. Petersburg back in the late 80s, it was not operating, so visiting it was a discovery for me. Inside, this cathedral is a real museum of beauty and mosaics. At the same time, it acts as an Orthodox church, as a result of which one can see religious rituals in reality. I advise you to visit this cathedral - it is very interesting and educational.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 22 May 2024
- Marina and Co. LtdSt. Petersburg, Russia84,724 contributionsThat we are “not slick”!All goes, all goes, autumn, my friends, it's a beautiful autumn in the courtyard. But the barometer in all cultured and educated people shows clearly. Interestingly, somehow the first place our Italian friends were asked to take me to in St. Petersburg was not the Hermitage, not St. St. St. St. St. St. St. St. Paul's Cathedral or Peter and Paul's Fortress, but the Church of the Saviour on the Blood! And so our history and architecture have shown them in all their glory that we too are “not slick of shit”! Bеnissimo! Meraviglioso! Fаntastico! Che bello! Santo cielo! are their exclamations from what they saw!Visited October 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 October 2024
- ТатьянаMoscow, Russia140 contributionsMagnificent TempleA beautiful temple erected at the site of Alexander II's fatal wound by order of his son. It now has the status of a museum, so admission is charged. The ticket price includes a short sightseeing tour. It's a mosaic temple. There's so many puzzles you won't see anywhere else. The mosaic was not made like St. Isaac's Cathedral (otherwise it would have taken decades). There's a different way of recruiting, so it's very interesting to compare them.Visited October 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 November 2024

Amazing architecture and history. The church was built on the site where Czar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881 & was undergoing external renovations when we visited in August 2019. The intricate and massive mosaic panels were created by leading artists of the time. The visit was extremely rushed and the inside was over crowded, as it is very popular with tourists, making it a rather unpleasant affair. We were warned not to take any valuables (including passports, wallets etc) inside by our guide as pickpockets frequent the site. Not to be missed when in St Petersburg but could have been a better experience.

We passed by the Kazan Cathedral and then walked along the channel embankment to Church of the Savior on Blood. The Church of Savior on Blood is quintessential Russian architecture with onion domes. After paying 250 Rub entry fee per person, we went inside to explore. There are numerous interesting mosaic work inside the church as well as the notable spot where Emperor Alexander II was assassinated.

This church has a very beautiful outer appearance : ) I actually saw another more beautiful onion church close to Peterhof but I can't remember what it's called. We paid more expensive tickets to go in at late evening during white night but its inside interior isn't much impressive compare to other cathedrals and churches in St Petersburg. I've seen better such as Kazan Cathedral. Besides, there is a souvenir market nearby but recommend you to buy Russian dolls at Moscow instead. I found same one but cheaper price in Moscow

A must see place in Saint Pet is Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. It is included in my top-3 of cathedrals in the city, however the loveliest is Saint Isaac`s cathedral.
It has a breathtaking long history since it was founded in 1883 on the site where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated – therefore «spilled blood». The inner decoration looks majestically due to numerous of mosaics. The fact is this church has the greatest square of mosaics in the world with over 7.500 sqm of amazing artwork. Entry fee is 350 rubles and it was a bit surprising for us that excursion is included for free. Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood leaved me overwhelmed and awe, I would recommend it to visit.

Totally a place worth visiting! This Church really is a Masterpiece of handicrafts. The history of this Church, now a Museum, is very interesting and the story about the restoration is unbelievable. The boisterous, vivid colours and ornaments, the religious pictures and the Atmosphere are almost indescribable: You just have to see and explore them yourself!

The inside is even more spectacular than the outside (which unfortunately was partly covered by scaffolding during our visit). We went independently but there were multiple guided group tours inside, most of which were in English. If you have time to hang around a bit, you can pick up quite a lot of the detailed information from listening in to these groups.

For me the visit of this church was just a bit above average as the tower is in the progress of renovation which did mean, that photos are worthless at the moment from the outside.
Inside the church is beautiful but also not the total "wow experience" which I expected.
Anyway a must see in Saint Petersburg and still worth visiting.

Main steeple was being repaired so it was covered. I really can't enjoy this kind of place with so many tour busses and commercialisation - queues and touts outside. The building doesn't really operate as a church.

Amazing architecture, a beautiful festival of colors, the great landmark of Saint Petersburg reminds us very important Historic Events regarding the House of Romanov. The Church on the Spilled Blood blooms at the end of Griboyedov Canal like a rare and exotic perennial flower, stunning the viewer with its riot of colors.
Take your time and enjoy your visit.

A must when in town. This place is really beautiful and full of majesty. The colors have altered. The interior of the church is a bit surprising and rather kitsch, but it is a must see.Avoid the crowds by going early in the morning otherwise it is just packed with tourists who do not respect the place.

Is this attraction quieter in the evenings or is there a quieter day or time when fewer tours arrive?
Written 18 June 2019
It is quieter later in the day when most of the tour buses have gone. That's when we went but our hotel was within walking distance so we could easily pick out time.
Written 27 June 2019
Do tickets have to be purchased in advance or can you buy them on the day. Thank you
