Tucked away in a corner bastion of the fortress of Peter and Paul is this rather grim prison with a two tiered series of cells set around a central courtyard. A number of reviewers complained that the cells were all the same but that's partly the point. The individual biographies written up next to each cell help populate the place... More

I was expecting more from this. It was one of the reasons we opted for the combo ticket instead of just visiting the church. It was interesting, but I think it could have been better. The cells are mostly the same, but you can see the difference after the riots when the mattresses and wall paper were removed. We laughed... More

A sombre place, but the snippets on most inmates of this forbidding place provided a revealing insight into the politics of the time. Some of those incarcerated here were well-known figures (Trotsky, Dostoevsky, and 4 Romanov Grand Dukes); others were more general activists against the government of the day. Many prisoners were subsequently hung or transported to Siberia. And I... More

My wife and I had a particular interest in seeing the cells as we are researching the story of a Russian actress who secured the release of her cousin, a member of the Provisional Government, after he had been arrested and imprisoned here. The displays and and presentation are very successful in conveying the sense of dread which would have... More

This wasn't part of our itinerary but we decided to buy the package ticket that included the fortress and the bastion. Not much to see here really. The place is pretty small and the cells all look the same. Reading the different write-ups outside each cell may make the place more interesting. I recommend skipping this and spend more time... We visited here recently as part of a trip to the Peter & Paul Fortress and I chose to write a specific review about it because we really enjoyed it. I mentioned this in my review of the overall attraction, but wanted to highlight it here. The exhibits are well-labeled and give a unique perspective on the social history of... More

There isn't really much to see, all the cells are much the same. If you are interested in Russian history, buy a nice book instead. If you have visited the conciergerie in Paris, this is not anywhere close to being as interesting. Each cell has a placard outside with photo and short biography of the former inmates. But unless you... More

This is quite a big facility, but it's relatively fast seen. After all all the cells are similar and there is not much more to see than the cells. Of course there are writings of who was living in each cell, but I have been in to much more interesting jail museums also. They could have used their imagination more.

Makes you realise how quickly fortunes can change. One minute you are in charge and then it is you that are powerless.Makes you appreciate good fortune and to treasure it. So many of the inmates met their maker after passing through its doors. An insight into the ups and downs of the Russian Revolution.

Check for details re: this place in my review of the Peter and Paul Fortress, where it is located. While there, see the other attractions as well.
