The first station building was erected in 1870 according to the design of the architect P. Kupinsky. The development of all major types of passenger transport after 1955 required the construction of appropriate types of structures. In 1960, a new railway station was built. The building looks quite laconic; among the interesting elements I would highlight the 30-meter spire.

A taxi dropped us off in front of Finland station, where we had booked tickets to take the Allegro express train to Helsinki. The main entrance to the station is very dramatic, with a soaring ticket hall . There is no seating at all inside the building. We purchased some very good pastries at a small shop under the stairs in the center of the hall. When we went to pass through the ticket gates to get to our train, we were 'told' (by pointing at a sign and indicating to go outside) that the entrance for international travel is around the side of the building.
We followed directions, and went around the corner. There is a small entrance near to the back end of the terminal for international departures to Finland. This entrance does have seating in a waiting area. Boarding began around 30 minutes prior to departure. Everyone had to scan bags through an airport style machine before gaining access to the platform. At the train door, a crew member scanned tickets and checked passports.
Luggage storage capacity at ground level is very, very minimal. We only found space for one suitcase in a cabinet, and then had to put the rest of our luggage overhead. The good news is that the overhead shelf had a lot of space to hold even large sized luggage. THe bad news is that lifting heavy suitcases above head level was a chore -- be prepared if you are traveling alone, you many need to ask for help if you have a large suitcase.
After St. Petersburg, the train is for disembarkation only at all stops. Russian border agents checked our passports and paperwork out shortly after we departed St. Petersburg, despite still being in Russia. After we passed the Finland border, Finnish border agents came around and stamped our passports in. A customs officer also came by to ask if we had anything to declare.
The train itself is very nice, spacious, clean, and easy to ride. The toilets were reasonably clean and easy to use. And the station on the Helsinki side is very convenient. The train had wifi, but it really only worked properly when in stations. And all seats had power for electronic devices, which is nice. There was also a restaurant car, which had a very long line.
The 3 stars above are for Finland Station. The Allegro train itself deserves 5 stars!

It worked out well for us to use the Allegro line for our trip from St. Petersburg to Helsinki. The station itself was not attractive. The waiting area was small. There were a few vending machines and a small gift shop. It's not easy to find the entrance. If I hadn't read some reviews, I would had had a hard time finding it. When you face the station, go to the left side of the building. Continue to walk until you are almost at the end of the building. There's a small entrance to Allegro.

If not for previous TripAdvisor reviews, I would have been hesitant to leave my taxi. The Allegro (international) departures are located in an unpromising terminal outside the main station. The neighborhood seemed a bit dicey, but my driver understood my hesitation and escorted me to the door. Don't expect this to be inside the main terminal.

If you use this station to go to Helsinki on the Allegro train, please be aware the entrance is not obvious. As you face the station, turn left and walk down the side of the station (on the outside). At the end you will see silver doors for the international entrance. The station is a normal station, other than the Lenin train. Not really a tourist destination.

It's not as if the engine stopped dead at the Finland Station in 1917 - it was only presented back by the government of Finland in 1957 - but it is a piece of world-historical significance and it is housed in a glass box by the side of the platforms (not on platform 5, as you may read elsewhere). As you look at the platforms beyond the ticket barriers from the front of the station, it's on the extreme right. We went to the information desk and asked whether we could see the Lenin Locomotive and a security guard was summoned, who then took us through the ticket barriers and showed us to the case - and also pointed out we could exit to the street just beyond. There were a few red carnations strewn at the base of the memorial inscription (as there were at the foot of the famous statue outside), but it is only fair to say there were rather more at the base of Pushkin's statue on Arts Square a few hours later.

We took the train from here to Helsinki. Got here early, and waited in the main hall, which, by this leg of our journey, was beginning to blend in with all the other train stations we have been in.
The railway station is connected to the Metro (Finlandskaya (sp?)), and pretty easy to access that way.
The waiting area for the St. Petersburg-Helsinki Allegro train is not in the main hall. If you were on the outside, facing the main station entrance, you have to walk around the left side of the train station to get to very small and non-descriptive Allegro train entrance.

We came to this station from Finland. Last kilometres were sad to see, because there were lots of real ugly 70's/80's concrete housing projects. Station itself is nothing special, few "shady" characters like always in stations, so take a good hold of your wallet. Can get really crowded and traffic outside is like from a videogame :)

Hi! Any ideia if it's possible to buy a SIM-Card at the station or nearby?
How about exchanging euros for rubles?

I will travel from Helsinki to St Petersburg. It seems that I will arrive at Finlyandsky Railway Station. I intended to get Rubles from the ATM machine at that station and purchase local SIM card, will I be able to do those in this station? I heard from other forum that the ATM machine can only withdraw Euros?

Здравствуйте! На самом вокзале, как и на перронах пригородных поездов, курить запрещено(распоряжение правительства). Но если отойти к памятнику Ленина, в сторону набережной, то можно найти место и урну.
