The Orginal structure was demolished in the Stalin era. Replaced by a swimming pool until the 1990s. Rebuilt in its original form and reconsecrated as the Patriarch's cathedral.

Do try and visit this cathedral. Check when it's open. It's stunningly beautiful inside. Find the steps and go down into the crypt, again it will blow your mind away. It looks very old but it was only rebuilt in 1979.

This is the largest Russian Orthodox Church in Moscow and it is magnificent. It is also the place where Pussy Riot performed their songs that landed the singers in jail.

Worth a side trip especially if you are visiting in the vicinity of the Kremlin. Its gold onion domes are unmissable.

This is a breath taking cathedral. Suggest you do a guided tour that takes you into the basement and then up to the roof where a covered walkway gives you amazing views over the Kremlin, Moscow river and city.

Having been rebuilt a number of times the Cathedral is really a work of art and the most beautiful I have seen. A walk around is a must as there is so much detail you don't want to miss.

I recommend visiting this cathedral as it is free of charge and is an imposing example of Orthodox architecture. Personally, I think that multiple cathedrals in St. Petersburg are more interesting than this one, but I am still glad that we walked over to this...More

I agree with some of the other peoples answers, I don't think you need to be part of a group. We were with a tour group and they did ask us to stay together and not wander around the cathedral independently, but I think this... More

This church was free to enter as there are still daily services there. We were part of a small group tour but there was no fee being charged for individual people coming in and no ticket vending booth. I believe there might... More
