To discover the culture and History of Essaouira I think the medina is the first place you should visit.

Wow you have just stepped back years !! I'm here during Ramadan so it's a little quieter than normal but this is good as you can wander about at your own pace looking at the shops and you don't get hassled like in Marrakesh. A...More

We loved this small but friendly medina where there was none of the harassment one often gets. Everyone was very friendly but never put pressure on us to buy! It also has lovely rampart walls one can walk on, though sadly these were under repair...More

Essaouira's medina is nothing to do with Marrakesh, people are more relaxed, easy to find good food, fish is great, and the beach s wonderful. Essaouirs's souks are much relaxed, nicer things and cheaper

Tamer than marrakech, this medina is chilled. Food on offer at every corner and friendly traders. It's a real easy place to walk around and absorb the culture

It's about 2 hours from Marrakesh, costs about 1000 Dhs for private car. Ours was easily arranged by our Dar (small hotel).
