If you'd like to experience an echo of colonial Sabah, take a trip on the North Borneo Steam Railway. It doesn't actually go very far, or very fast, but somehow the slow and steady pace is just right. Very attentive train staff wearing pith helmets and white socks, bells clanging to announce the departure of the train and clouds of... More

We did this wonderful steam train trip because MAS cancelled our flights to Sandakan. We are so happy they did. The train is a restored wood powered steam engine and it took us on a 5 hour journey from KK to Papar Town and back in comfortable and authentic carriages. The breakfast and tiffin set lunch were delicious. The staff,... More

My brother and i took the train from tg aru station to beaufort and back on the same day. Stop over at beaufort only took 1 hour which we thought it was a little too short to really experience the little town. We took the cheap ticket (not the tourist package) and it was worth it as we could see... More

We planned our whole trip around the fact that this train only runs twice a week and were really looking forward to the trip. The train was supposed to start at 10 am and finish at 2 pm BUT due to the steam not having enough pressure we sat on the train for 90 minutes and did not start until... More

My husband and I very much enjoyed spending a few hours on the Borneo Railway. You left the boarding station at 10am and had two stops, one where you could visit a Chinese temple, and one where there was a local market on. You then did the return journey non stop. You receive a light breakfast when you first depart,... More

Do take the opportunity to ride this railway. The staff were friendly and service slick. Train ran on time for our visit but we were warned to expect the unexpected as it's possible there may be delays- but go with a who cares attitude! All part of the fun! Breakfast was served - light meal, but enough for a morning... More

On the day of the trip our driver and guide from Amazing Borneo Tours arrived in plenty of time for us to get to the North Borneo Railway for departure. Take a ride on the historic North Borneo Railway I enjoyed my day trip on the NBR as it made its way southwest toward Papar Town. The train has been historically refurbished to its former glory - a beautiful wood stove powered engine, and classic interior passenger compartments. The staff also dress in uniforms from the glory days era. The... More
