We were in akita with Asuka II to see the Kanto Festival and this museum tour was part of the package. It was ok - displaying peter rabbit novels, artwork, etc. but just wasn't to my taste. there are other shops around this area and interesting to walk around. There was also a large garden across the street.

We originally hadn't planned to visit this museum, but did when we saw they had a Marimekko exhibition on at the time. It was a really vibrant and well laid out exhibition, and we were glad we took the time to see it.
The permanent collection was less inspiring however, and if you don't read much japanese you will struggle with this place as there was very little English signage.
Only worth a visit if the exhibition they have on at the time is of interest to you. Not worth the time and money for the permanent collection.

I have very mixed feelings about this museum. I had a great time painting shells for the 貝合わせ event; however, I find the museum lacking. 1) no discount for seniors 2) they translate a very small percent of signs into English 3) the permanent collection seems to be a random assortment of mediocre paintings. Most recently, I was chased down by an employee who saw me with my phone. I was standing in front of a sign with lots of text in Japanese. The header was in English but the rest in Japanese. Seriously? I was using a translator to understand what it said when she ran across the room to tell me I can't used my phone. I was annoyed and told her I'm not taking a photo but translating the sign because they chose to only translate a handful of signs. On top of this annoyance, the Marimekko exhibit was ¥200 more than normal (¥800). She later apologized. I would chalk this up to training but the other employee knew what I was doing. She stayed close to make sure I was taking photos of the exhibit but never told me I can't use my phone to translate the signs. This museum occasionally has interesting exhibits but experiences like these makes me not want to come back.
