This is one stop of our 2016 Autumn leaf-viewing Trip. Lake Towada 十和田湖was indeed serene and peaceful. We were very impressed by the various colors, shapes, and sizes of autumn maple leaves and placid lake water.

Fall season is the time to visit Lake Towada. Access is easy with a JR Rail Pass using the JR bus from Aomori to Lake Towada. We were able to see the full greenery at Aomori to the full majestic autumn colors from the bus ride up the mountain, great views of the Oirase River with numerous water falls and... More

We went through the National Park on the way to Aomori. We stopped at Lake Towada and had a lovely cruise across the lake on one of the excursion boats. Even though the day was overcast, the scenery along the lake was beautiful. Lake Towada occupies the caldera of an active volcano which is fed by the Oirase River. After... More

Very nice colors. Best colors on the approach road to oirase stream. Bit on colder side but lucky to have sun out while we did oirase stream walk. Got the best vegetarian food you can ask for at the end walk at north village.

We stayed in Yasumiya during the peak autumn viewing time, taking a JR bus from Hachinohe to ishikedo and walking the oirase river 10 km to the lake, then catching the 4pm ferry back to Yasimuya. The weather was fine and both the walk and ferry views were phenomenal. The shore colours from the ferry in particular at sunset were... More

i've been to Lake Towada on numerous occasions and the area is very pretty. If you're into nature walks and outdoor type stuff, this is a great place for you. The trails are nice for all family members. On a few you can even take a stroller. Only weird thing is that the town is very run down and partially... More

We visited on a cloudy day so it was quite a downer. But as soon as the clouds cleared, the colours of the red and yellow trees and the green lake shone through. The surrounding streams and water falls are also worth a visit.

The lake is huge and very beautiful. Boat rides, walks, shrines, and statues. There are several onsens and the JR Bus from either Aomori or Hiraizumi Shinkansen. Plan to spend at least 2-3 days. The re is plenty to keep you busy for 4-5 days. The JR bus also stops along the stream and lake itself making hiking possible through... More
