We were not sure whether in December it would be worthwhile to come to this garden. Were we pleasantly surprised! There was a museum which was informative. There was a view to Kochi. There were even beautiful autumn leaves in December. But the most stunning part was the green house. It was huge and contained many exotic flowers. I read... More

The garden is beautiful, the landscape is beautiful, and the story of Makino, the botanist and illustrator is inspirational - a local genius who became a hero of botany for the entire country

I was in Kochi visiting a friend who works at the botanical garden, so it was just natural that I visited it. The visitor centre and the museum buildings are very new and have interesting architecture. The garden itself is not too big, however it has very nice paths, hilltop view over the town, lovely trees and flowers, even at... More

We were planning on a short visit, then realised when we arrived that half an hour wasn't going to cut it. While it ended up not feeling as big as it looked on the map, you could spend a few hours wandering every path. I would say it was just an average visit for us - the grass was kind... More

We visited the gardens with our kids. The gardens are gorgeous and the kids can stroll around. When the cherries are blossoming it is incredible. Look out to the architecture of the old warm house and the cafeteria. The kids enjoyed the garden and the sweets.

We went there to kill time, but truly enjoy the garden even not much flowers and plants are not at there best, in the autumn.

It's good for the green house, wow that was fantastic. The rest of the garden I wasn't impressed with. I visited in autumn, but has nothing on most other gardens in Japan. One to visit if you have an interest in botany: plant varieties only. Worthy of only an hour or 2 there. 10% discount on entry with MY bus... More

Can spend a few hours strolling through Makino Botanical Garden, depending on the season. This garden is very different from traditional Japanese landscape gardens. There is a greenhouse, which has tropical plants, so even in winter there is greenery. The garden feels very open and without barriers, and the flowers are very vivid in color. The gardens were named after... More

Interesting for anyone remotely interested in plants, even children. Very nice café in a modern building made from natural materials. Went there on a rainy day - there are enough covered areas (the greenhouse! with big lotus leafs you can see from underneath!) so it'd doable even with heavier rain. The gardens are on Godaisan, so visting this in combination... More
