There are some unusual features to this temple, which is one of the 88 temples on the Shikoku pilgrimage path, in particular the tunnel that cuts through the mountain behind the main temple, ill-lit with uneven steps but lined with many buddhas, there's a side...More

This temple is pretty close to the main tourist area in Matsuyama so you won't be alone here. Typical chaotic, cluttered area with shops, places to eat. That being said I enjoyed the grounds and it was certainly convenient to our hotel and onsen.

Ishiteji is an important stop along the pilgrimage as this is supposedly established by the reincarnation of Emon Saburo, the original henro or pilgrim. It was busy with preparations for a local event the day we visited. There is a pagoda and lots of small...More

Walking to Ishiteji from Dogo Onsen (up the stairs to Isaniwa shrine and then from the back parking lot of Isaniwa) is the best way to experience this temple (which is temple 51 of 88 on the Henro pilgrimage). We took a detour through the...More

Absolutely a beautiful and serene place to visit, Sit and relax. Beautiful Temples and Shrines, amazing architecture and picture opportunities. Many statues of various beings and gods and just a tranquil setting. Very well worth the visit.

This temple was unlike any I have seen. It was an adventure to explore the grounds. Trees and plants were overgrown hiding some beautiful statutes. This temple is famous because of the monk Kukai and is on the pilgrimage route for the island. A statue...More

Wow- just wow. If you only go to one place in Matsuyama, this has to be it. Ishite-ji Shrine, number 51 of the 88 temples on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, is a short 10-15 minute stroll from Dogo Onsen. The walk to the temple from Dogo...More

The cave there is the main factor of why I tour there. It is exciting to enter the cave with limited lighting.

If you feel that you have seen enough temples and shrines, you need to visit this one. We came in via the back of one of the tunnels through about 100 metres of statues in semi darkness, then turned into another with even more eclectic...More
