I have been to the Takasakiyama Natural Zoo on four occasion between 1990 and 2016. If you are in Beppu or Oita and are into monkeys don't miss this place. One word of advice, the monkeys are wild animals and will attack you if you look at them the wrong way. There is nothing separating from you from the monkeys.... More

A friend and I were taken too what was described to us as 'Monkey Mountain' as part of our home stay with an Oita Family and it was safe to say neither of us were disappointed. Upon arrival both of us had an initial panic of having to hike up the mountain side, especially when the line for the tram... More

What a lovely experience! The natural 'zoo' is situated mountainside, with caretakers who provide food for the two troops of wild monkeys that live in the area. This acts as a natural deterrent between local wildlife and local residents & businesses, who would otherwise find the animals to be a nuisance due to scavenging behaviors. A tram is available to... As part of our cruise tour we stopped at the natural zoo and even though it was non stop rain the monkeys were still out playing. Great natural area for the animals and saw lots of baby monkeys with their families. Feel very natural and fun when at feeding time they run for the food, even between your legs.

At the Monkey Mountain they have a collection of around 1300 Japanese macaques roaming around freely. They call it a Natural Zoo. The monkeys can roam free but will always be around because every half hour during openinghours from 08:00 to 17:00 they will be feeded. An interring experience. Though.. don't try to feed them yourself. They are wild and... More

Monkey mountain is a cheap and fun trip good for the whole family. Beautiful scenery and you get to be very up close with hundreds of Japanese macaques. They have several feeding times throughout the day, which are worth sticking around for. However because of the lack of fences and how loud the macaques can be, it could be a... More

I was in Japan, hitchhiking for two months when Expo '70 was going on. I took a ferry and train to Beppu, stuck in a monsoon overnight on a train on the way to Beppu. A beautiful park! And the monkeys were a great surprise! A beautiful, lovely quiet, gentle place. Along with the hot springs this was an amazing... More

I went to this place with a friend just as a quick visit and it was. The entry fee was cheap, the walk up the hill was only a short distance and the place was full of monkeys. They can be frightening to small children as the fight amongst themselves. The young monkeys are cute and it was good to... More

If you understand japanese or bring japanese friend with you. You could understand interesting explanation about the monkeys life. Even though it's monkey place, the place was so clean. And the monkeys are well behaved as long as you don't have eye contact and don't show your food. I could stay here for hours just to observe the monkeys!
