The hot sands are surprisingly warm and relaxing. Building is old, but that is part of its charm. The procedures are self explanatory but make sure you bring a towel or you'll need to buy one there.

Came here one night around 8pm while I was staying at Beppu. This onsen is located within the red light district and the ancient structure can easily be spotted once around the neighbourhood. There is a choice of either the onsen or the sand bath, of which most tourist would opt for the sand bath. You can make payment at... More

Being a newbie to public onsen, my first observation was it does not match the facilities found in the private/hotel onsen. Nonetheless, it was reasonable clean and we had the bath all to ourselves when we went early in the morning. Being buried in warm wet sand may not sound much different from a day at he beach, but there... More

It helps if you bring your own towel but if not they have them for sale. Men and women are buried in sand together so bring your camera into the sand.bath and they will take photo of you

Great old building and sand bath was heaven! Definitely worth it! And the onsen was hot enough and ladies were great to talk to! Am going back 👍

My daughter couldn't do the hot sand onsen because of her skin condition and she can't stand heat but it was so worth it for the rest of our party. I thought I was going to get claustrophobic but just start breathing slow and it feels so good. The weight of the sand on you is so relaxing, it's just... More

A very old building. We have a great fun on it. Staff are very nice and helpful. Better to go there in the early morning.

The architecture of the building is beautiful and the building itself is very old (apparently from the 19th century). I only tried the sand bath but it was a pretty good experience. Naked under your Japanese shirt (provided by the onsen), the only thing you have to do it's to let the staff (friendly ladies speaking a basic but understandable... More

Impressive old building. Has a unique indoor sand bath in a big room, looks good and the sand bath is really relaxing. Very nice staff and atmosphere.
