After reading various online articles for this place, I thought it was simply ~500 yen for 30 mins steam time and you can bring your own food. But it seems that recently they've changed the prices drastically.
Feb 2020 prices -
350 yen for 20 mins steam only if you then buy food they provide.
BUT if you bring your own food there is a 1000 yen cover charge - so 1350 ticket price if you buy your own food.

Overall a rushed and quite stressful experience. I thought this place was ran by volunteers so I am confused as to where the 1000 yen cover charge is going. Maybe the staff are paid now, which is fine, but not worth 1000 yen extra!

I'll get the negative out of the way first. The wait time is VERY long. If you don't have patience don't bother. I believe I waited 40 minutes to an hour. Or thereabouts. A LOT of people so it took awhile. Then we had to sit on the bottom level where it was cold as the wind was blowing inside. Once we closed the door it was more bearable. I wouldve liked to sit upstairs but i think that was reserved for locals? That's the negative.

The Positives are this was a fantastic experience of how locals cooked food ever since the Edo period. For a history buff like me it was a very cool experience to have. The food was tasty, and at most took twenty minutes to cook that would be your chicken and pork products. Other things like fish and veggies took a shorter amount of time. I complained about the wait time, but during that time I went out and explored a bit and took some photos so it flew by.

I'd like to go again when there was less people if there is such a thing, and maybe order more food.

I had been several times in Beppu, but it was my first time to try this “Mushiburo”. It is a kind of herb sauna. The entrance to sauna is regulated by staff, and one lies down inside for 8 minutes. (You can extend 2 minutes, if you like.) You can’t visit one more time after you go out from the sauna. After the sauna, you can take a bath. It is a very special experience that you can not find elsewhere. So it is quite recommendable.

The restaurant is about 5 minutes walk from the Kannawa bus station 1 which is convenient for visitor. Overall experience in the restaurant was easy. You will purchase your menu via a machine. There after pass the menu to the staff for food preparation. You'll be given the food to pass on to the staff at the steam room. You'll given a chance to put in and take out the food by yourself into the onsen steamer. After that wait for 25 minutes before the food is ready to eat. Suggest visitor to purchase vegetable menu such as shiitake mushroom, pumpkins etc.

It’s tasty, but too many visitors.

This restaurant is just 2 minutes walk across the road from Beppu bus station & Information centre.

Not a big place & waiting time is about 1 hour or more, depending on the crowds. You do the reservation first & come back at given time.

Then, select & pay for the food you want, collect it & they allocate you a steaming counter in the open kitchen. Staff will guide you through the steaming process.

The food is rather bland ( so called "healthy" ), unappetizing, portions very small & expensive. For the prices charged, one can have very good tempura or sushi or ramen in many places.

Frankly, that small portions here shared by few people (for one meal) isn't going to make anyone any healthier.

Personally, we felt this experience is just an expensive Novelty. Yes, one gets to do something different- do your own steaming of food using "natural hot steam" coming from underground & connected to the enclosed steamers (which you can't tell the difference from normal). That's about it.

One can actually just stand outside the steaming kitchen (open concept),
& observe the process. Nothing special- looked just like any steaming.

Then go inside the restaurant ( just walk in/out freely), look at the menu & the actual cooked food that others are eating. Then decide if you want to wait at least an hour for bland, expensive food.

This self service restaurant is not your usual place where you order your food and have them cooked and served to you.

First you need to select the food you want to eat by selecting them at a vending machine and paying there. Next you need to book your table and once your number is called, you pick up your raw vegetables and food and you head to the steam kitchen to steam your food. There will be someone there to guide you and tell you what time to come back once your food is ready. So once your timer has reached the time you head to the kitchen and put on your gloves to bring out the food.

They all tasted so yummy, juicy and delicious. After finishing your meal you need to clear your own table trash your waste and wash up all the dishes.

Liked and loved this experience! It was truly interesting. You can either bring your own food (510Y for small or 820Y for big tray plus 700Y for bringing your own food!) or buy ready platters. There’s even a water sprout to try out ‘hot spring’ water.

We stopped here after we visited the five Kannawa Hells. You can bring your own food to steam but as tourists, we purchased the food. You "buy" your food from the machine, take the ticket to the counter where you are given a timeline. After a five minute wait, we were able to receive our purchased food from the kitchen and with the help of a staff member, allowed to steam our food at a steam Station. We had to self serve table set up, steam, and even wash the dishes since the place is apparently staffed by volunteers (mostly older persons). The hot steam perfectly cooked our food.

Really enjoyed this. After a couple of weeks in Japan my body just needed some veges. This was perfect. Loved the dumplings too.

We had a very short wait. That seems to be the major complaint here. And the comments about bland food - not sure about them. Not everything needs MSG on it.

Foot bath next door was also a lot of fun. I suspect we were here on a quiet day. Again no issues with crowds.
