The Sakurajima volcano is great & huge. You can see the volcano from the city. The foot hot spring can try it near the tourist center. That's several tourism points can easy to reach if you drive

The first time I visited Kagoshima 2 years ago, Sakurajima was off limits except for the shoreline. This time I took an all day tour that started at the train station. We made several stops on the main land before the bus drove onto the...More

Went in first week of June, sunny day out, so it was brutally hot. Must be prepared, here are little shades on the island: sun screen, water, hats, surgical masks, snacks.). Stopped by the information center and watch the video to understand the formation and...More

We joined the bus tour which cost 500yen per pax. But really disappointed as the bus full of pax and also standing pax. We can't view anything as all sceneries have been blocked by crowded passengers. We have been waiting for 45 mins long queue...More

We went here on a shore excursion for a cruise. You have to take a ferry boat to get to the island and then a bus. There are nice trails and a small visitor center as well as some vendors selling huge vegetables and souvenirs....More

Had a blast on Sakurajima! Definitely go get a rental car as it is very easy to drive to all the photo spots on Sakurajima volcano then. The ferry ride will only take 15min and is ¥1.860 for 2 persons incl. 4-5m car one way....More

Sakura-jima is a volcano/island about 15 minutes by ferry from Kagoshima port. I thought it was a great place to wander around (and up if you have the strength and stamina...and time). It was really windy the day I visited and it was quite late...More

It is still an active volcano and is less than half an hour's ferry ride from Kagoshima City. If you do not have a car, they have scheduled buses, either half day or whole day tour. It is a great day trip from the City.

My son and I had about 3 hours wandering around on foot. Unfortunately we were too late to catch the tour bus around the island. It is very peaceful here and we spent about an hour with our feet in the foot onsen, it was...More

Questions & AnswersAsk a question
I would like to enter the Island from the east via route 220, then after driving around the island. Can I catch the ferry from the island to Kagoshima city with my car? I haven't noticed anyone taking this route.

Yes, you can. Price list of the car ferry is here. If you drive an ordinary car, you are suppose to pay less than 2000yen for a car.
If we decided to hire a bike how difficult is the ride. Do we hire bikes before we get on the ferry or on the island ??

All of the above are true. The little ferry terminal has some hire facilities. Unless you are a really good cyclist you probably will find the climb up to the observation centre extremely taxing. The bus tour is a good... More
