Due to its geographical and historical characteristics, Fukuoka City has served as a gateway to continental Asian culture since ancient times. Today it has assumed a new role, that of a key interactive city for Asia. Fukuoka Asian Art Museum opened in 1999, as a part of the city’s progressive strategy for interaction with different Asian cultures.

The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum is the only museum in the world that systematically collects and exhibits Asian modern and contemporary art. The works in the collection of the museum are not imitation of Western art or repetitions of traditional works. Instead they seek to overcome the existing framework of art, being made by artists living in ‘contemporary’ Asia. These artists attempt to acutely express their message in and about this changing world of Asia. FAAM's exhibitions of Asian modern and contemporary art are rich in depth and quality, and wide in scope. They present the originality and charm of Asian art in a way that cannot be experienced in any other museum in the world.

The museum has also been functioning as a place for people to become familiar with Asian arts and culture through the artistic creations and researches of the invitees of the Residence Program. It is an interactive museum - the place of meeting, understanding each other and creating together.

Enjoyed the visit but not a substantial exhibition

Main gallery had good English descriptions which improved the experience. The separate anime exhibition was good too however no English descriptions

It was a bit tricky finding this place, but once there we enjoyed it thoroughly. There are not a lot of pieces on display, but those that are were high quality, as were the interpretive notes attached to them. Pleasant cafe, and shop. Very attractive, spacious gallery. Recommended.

I looked forward to my visit and liked the idea as I understood it. But, honestly, I didn't find much art to enjoy here. The only theme I could see was that all the art was created by Asians, mostly Southeast Asian actually. There was an strong undercurrent of anti-American imperialism conveyed, whether the art was created by leftists or... More

Thank you very much for your comment. I believe the work mentioned in your comment is a set of propaganda poster made during Vietnam War. It was an exhibition of Vietnamese art and the propaganda posters were exhibited along with modern style paintings/prints made under the influence of European art and more recent contemporary paintings. While it is true that... More

Only issues I had were there was no English guided recordings so it wasn't worth the money to not understand what's going on

I love this place, love the chance to experience the work of artists from many different Asian cultures. The show I saw here was really stimulating, thoughtfully curated and sweeping in scope, without being overwhelming. A must for lovers of the arts of Asia.

I visited this venue one afternoon and was surprised there were no other tourists. I saw a few displays of furniture in glass enclosures but no art. Unfortunately, Fukuoka has little English signage in and on buildings so I must have missed the directional signs.

Thank you for your comment. It seems you arrived at different floor or venue. We do not display furniture. We are locating on the 7F of Riverain building (shopping mall) and there is a direct elevator on the 1F to the museum floor. If you missed this direct elevator, it might be difficult to reach us. We apologize for your... More
