Went in mid-December and had the entire place to ourselves. The temple grounds are rather small, but there's nothing stopping you from walking out to the floating temple and gazing out at Lake Biwa for as long as you like.

Even this temple is small, I could spend 2 hours in it. The view is stunningly beautiful. There's not much people even it's holiday. The floating hall is amazing. You can get to feel closer to the lake and absorb the scenery with cool breeze. I didn't want to leave even I already walked around the place. Definitely going there... More

Ukimi-do temple is a floating shrine on lake Biwa. Coupled with other sites along lake Biwa it can be incorporated into a day trip from Kyoto. I was very surprised that to enter this temple and shrine was 300 yen after reading here that it was free! I was informed that most manned temples (understandably) charge an admission fee. This temple was very peaceful and tranquil. There was a small stand to purchase talismans and fortunes and informational pamphlets in Japanese or English. I enjoyed sitting... More
