The journey (by Tobu bus) from Nikko is part of the fun - ascending the 48 bend road is great. But the lake is delightful and provides plenty of walking, eating, drinking, etc opportunities.

We enjoyed kayaking on Lake Chuzenji.
The water in Lake Chuzenji was very clean, and I felt like it was cool and very refreshing. Mt. Nantai seen from the lake is very beautiful.
When we were resting on the lake beach, I could see small fish and shrimps swimming.
After kayaking, we ate Japanese traditional curry at U-corn restaurant at Lake Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel. There is a free boat house nearby there so we can change our wet shoes and shirts.
Our family had a great experience.

We just walked around the lake near to the bus station. Also viewed from near the campsite side lake and it was different look and our friend said that the area was banned for swimming because of sudden deep drop down of the lake bottom. He said the lake depth was more than 150 meters!
Because of Covid19 closure time, no one was out on the lake by boats etc, it was calm and quiet place.

This lake is awesome in the correct meaning of the word. Large mountains surround it and it gives a calming feel. This looks like it is an area for walking and the vista are stunning. Worth stopping off for a ten minute stroll if you are passing and to be fair this is probably why you are in the area.

I did a winter walk along the shores of Lake Chuzenji. There's a good track around it that takes a few hours to travel. It's quite beautiful in winter.

Very nice maple foliage cruise. We took the 1 hour round trip cruise to enjoy the scenic red and golden trees. Beautiful!

How marvelous lake!Unfortunately, this time we couldn’t go on board because of a typhoon. But we decided to go back again. Maybe I should put up my schedule for next year.
I love traveling to places with the water on the lake or beaches. It is an amazing sight such as here.
Although the maple leaves haven’t turned red or yellow colors yet, Lake Chuzenji is always beautiful at any time. Especially, this is one of the best places to watch the sunset.

It's just unbelievably good place to spend time. It would be great if you go on your own as the bus packages keep such a short time over here - 10 mins.

Being in March, it was quite quiet on Lake Chuzenji. No boats were operating and there was not much activity along the lake shore. But it was a beautiful scene, looking out over the water and seeing the majestic mountains surrounding the lake. Certainly would have been much better to get out on the lake, but it was peaceful and tranquil.

We came here after visiting the UNESCO shrines. This was a welcome respite from the huge crowds. It was nice to just relax by the lake or chill at one of the restaurants or cafes along the lake or even rent a boat and row it around the lake.

Is there a hot spring in this area that has a private room rental for day trippers?

Hi, I stayed at Hatago Nagomi which there’s no private onsen(hot spring) in room but public (for hotel guests) both indoor and outdoor.
It’s small & cozy hotel with very nice service & superb location right in front of the lake.
Is it easy to travel to lake Chūzenji from Nikko station? Also would it be safe as I’m travelling alone? I’ll be visiting this attraction after golden week in early May so would this place be very quiet? And is there a last bus I need to take note of as I need to return back to Tokyo

There are two train stations in Nikki, JR Nikki and Tobu Nikki. These two stations are very close, just 2 minutes walking. You can buy travel bus tickets from both stations. The bus will stop at both stations. Don’t worry. Just ask the guy in the ticket office. He/she will tell you everything. Study the bus ticket closely. There are numbers representing bus stops. Even if you don’t know Japanese, you can still check the bus number of the next stop. You can also find the bus schedule at the bus stop back to Nikki. The bus travel time from Nikko to Chuzenji Lake is around 45 minutes, very very punctual. From Chuzenji Lake to Nikki, another 45 minutes. As I remember, there is a train from Tobu Nikki station to Shinjuku of Tokyo every 30 minutes.

Parks are free but you will likely want to buy a multi day bus pass.

Hi SY, where did you enjoy the hot spring (onsen) around Chuzenji? Thanks.

There are many onsens nearby, you can find one for example at the end of a bus line. Sorry i dont remember which i visited couple of month ago but they can help at the bus station at Nikko. I recommend search for the one that fits best to your taste and budget. Dont miss the boat trip on the lake, well worth!
