If visiting Hakone this is a must! If you bought the Hakone Free Pass this will be one of the travel amenities.

Watch the Mount Fuji reports. This closes down often due to gases, ashes, etc. this runs very timely and has fantastic views. I would try mornings rather than afternoons.

Breathtaking views of the mountains, on a clear day you can see Mt. Fuji too.. the live volcano at Owakudani is not to be missed at all..surely recommended attraction.

We left Tokyo at 7:30am for Hakone day trip. We were back in Tokyo at 3:30pm. We bought the Hakone passes for the loop trip. The Ropeway is a good transport to Lake Ashi. The Ropeway is well organized.

On an overcast day, when you cannot see Mt Fuji, why would anyone want to take the cable-car ? Especially when they pack people like sardines !? There's nothing interesting up there.

it is inclusive with a hakone free pass. a cable car that fits about 15 people at a time, it was exhilarating on a windy day where the car swung wild. in spite of haze it was still a beautiful experience for the views.

If you don't have the Hakone free pass, this is a little pricey (2400 yen return trip), but it's a nice way to see the volcano, the lake, and Gora park.

We travelled on the rope way in May, Golden Week in Japan, which is a week of public holidays. A great experience but massive waiting times, very over crowded!

The easiest way is to take the Romance Train from Subuya station. It departs from the upstairs platform and is a quick ride to Hakone main station, where you change to the local train up the mountain. The trains depart... More

I think it is very safe. But one of the stop has a very strong hot spring smell, so I would be safe to check with your OB first. The rope is very safe but long ride.
