Hakone Tozan Railway
Nov 2019
A unique ride on a historic rail line. It seems to serve the locals very well. It was a slow smooth ride with an idyllic view of the mountain scenery, shops and houses so close to the rail line. It was a short steep ride to the stop where we had to disembark in order to catch the cable car. Short but sweet ride.

Still closed with replacement bus service
Feb 2020 • Couples
Replacement bus running from Gora station to take you to Souzan for the ropecar/gondola/cable car. All still included in the Hakone free pass (4500 yen for 2 days from Odawara)

Lovely switch back railway
Mar 2019
Fortunately we got to do a lot of this rail trip although buses were needed for a part that was closed. The countryside was beautiful even on a dull day. The old railcar creaked and rattled but was nice and warm on a wintery day.

Beautiful Hydrangeas
Jul 2019
Thoroughly enjoyed the leisurely ride on an old tram down the mountain. There's one track and we happened to be there during hydrangea season, which lined both sides of the track. It's interesting how they work the switchbacks. The negative is the seats are a little uncomfortable.

Closed due to typhoon damage
Dec 2019 • Family
This is now closed due to typhoon damage and has been replaced by a bus service between hakone yumoto and gora. The bus trip is charming in its own way but not good for those prone to car sickness due to the winding road up the mountain. Pl check website for reopening dates.

Out of service
Dec 2019
Train’s out of service while tracks undergo repairs until March 2020. Replacement buses are overcrowded and infrequent. And the service sucks. Even though the bus wasn’t full, she made me wait another 1/2 hour for the next bus. Skip the overpriced Hakone Free Pass, completely not worth it considering it’s all bus service.

Very cute!!!!!

Cute train up the mountain before the ropeway. Lots of little Hakone stations. Super cute and courtesy train guard announcing and checking all doors driving up.

The train staff was extra helpful in getting my husband in a wheel chair on and off the train on a sloped platform.

Short but pleasant ride up the mountain
Oct 2019
This mountain railway, which I believe was built by Swiss engineers, is famous for it's switchbacks which are necessary to allow it to climb the steep mountain. It starts at the Hakone-Yumoto station then climbs about 500 meters to Gora. At each switchback the train reverses direction and the stops seemed to be perfectly timed to alow the downward bound train to pass. The journey time only takes about 45 minutes but the countryside is pleasant and the switchbacks are a novelty. Stops do allow you to enjoy the Hakone Open Air Sculpture Park (well worth a visit) and from Gora you can catch the Hakone Tozan Cable Car (a furnicular) further up to Sounzan. From Sounzan the Hakone Ropeway can normally be taken but it was closed when we were there due to volcanic activity which was a shame because I was looking forward to it (it also allows you to do a circular route using multiple forms of transport).
