We arrived later in the day, roughly 4pm, after traveling from Zama and stopping at the train station for lunch, and checking into our hotel at 2:30pm. Apparently everything closes at 4:45 or 5pm. Would've been smarter and came earlier if we had done more research on hours of operations. Black eggs were easily purchased at a walk up window.... More

Use the Hakone Ropeway to arrive here or better yet buy the Hakone Free Pass and use the cable car, ropeway and river cruise to spend the day seeing Hakone sites.

What an Ariel view of a live volcano.. this ropeway ride is not at all to be missed if visiting japan. This followed with a boat ride on lake Ashi is worth all the long travel timeit takes for visiting Hakone from Tokyo. Absolutely must visit attraction.

definitely go to this amazing place--and then take a short cruise of lake ashi-- the air can smell awful but leave it to the efficient, considerate japanese who provide a cloth to cover your nose!

If you like volcano view with the sulphuric smell then you have to visit this place. Plenty of specialty food and gifts to buy as souvenir. The black eggs cooked in the volcano is a must try.

Well, inbound tourism has hit Japan. Be prepared for crowds. Not really sure it is worth getting off the cable car. Hot springs are not currently accessible.

I went here on a clear day in last winter by Hakone ropeway from Togendai. Owakudani is the area in an active volcanic zone where sulfurous fumes, hot springs and hot rivers can be experienced. There was a hiking and walking trails around Owakudani. The trails will be close for visitors due to volcanic gases. Owakudani has a beautiful views... More

Oh, the sights! Oh, the smells! This is memorable, especially when you consider that the site was closed a year ago because of the volcanic activity. Even so, the sulphur smell is quite intense. Those who have asthma, heart disease or bronchitis might consider not visiting. For anyone else, definitely worth the visit. The landscape itself is magnificent - snow-capped... More
