We took a taxi here from the cruise port (2000y) and visited it after the aoyama villa. It's a nice historical building with a good view, costs 300y and takes 10-15 minutes to go through. We have visited Otaru three times in as many years, but never knew about the old herring fishing museum out on the point of the harbour. It takes about 20 min driving from otaru canal & lots of road tunnels.but a bit dissapointed coz i thoughT it has a place to drink n rest.just a good spot to take pic

This is located within walking distance of the Otaru Aquarium. You will see a building up on the hill. You can drive to it or just walk to it. It is a self tour and you can watch a video about the life of the herring fishermen back in the day. Interesting to watch.

Drive over here walk up to the lighthouse, you could enjoy a very good view of the coast with low column rock formation and you could overlook the aquarium too, free sealion show ...

About fifteen minutes by car from Otaru proper in the Shukutu (祝津) district is a so-called “Nishin Goten” or herring mansion on a hilltop.
