Glimpse of days gone by

The townscape of Iwase shows some great examples of old timber houses and traditional shops along the seaside.

We got off the Iwase Station on the Toyama Light Rail and walked along the traditional street. We came across Mori House, the owner of which was in shipping from Iwase to Hokkaido. We had a few hours to fill, when overnighting for the Alpine Route. We spent a pleasant couple of hours wandering around down here. Late afternoon, no one about (tourists or locals it seemed) but some interesting architecture and streetscapes.

This little seaport town has undergone a wonderful transformation. Many of the buildings have been updated, but in a way to retain their traditional look. Behind the gorgeous facades however, if you delve a bit deeper is a completely functioning artist village. Local craftspeople have set up their studios there making everything from woodcarvings, to pottery to amazing glassware. There... More
