Gold leaf workshop
Nov 2019
When we arrived in Kanazawa we hadn't planned on doing anything with gold leaf, but after a stop at the gold leaf museum, we sought out Hakuza because as crafters we read that they did mini workshops. Hakuza advertises a number of gold leaf workshops a day. We turned up at the shop just after the time one would have started. They were more than happy for my friend and I to do the mini workshop (reasonably priced). We had a choice of gold leafing chopsticks or stencilling a black plate. We did the plate and it came out beautifully. Our instructor was super lovely, patient and helpful. We then went on to buy a few more trinkets in the store. The building, the store, the famous gold leaf wall were all very sparkky and blingy but really interesting with helpful smiley staff and there are some cute gold touches in unexpected places. I'd recommend the shop and/or workshop if you are passing through this popular district and have time to have a go at an ancient 'craft'.

Don’t miss the gold leaf house!
Apr 2018 • Couples
Kanazawa produces 99% of Japan’s gold leaf. Hakuza produces gold leaf used for the restoration of fine arts and national treasures of Japan. The shop provides all kinds of gold-leaf souvenirs, but the most interesting thing there is the two-story model house made of white washed plaster and covered entirely with 24K gold platinum leaf. What a contrast to the old wooden shingle-sided houses that make up the rest of this street in the eastern pleasure district!

Gold leaf

Real gold, how the sheets are made. More interesting is the products made from the gold leaf. Good to see the dedication to craftsmanship. Also I now know the gold leaf for the Golden Temple in Kyoto comes from this establishment

Gold overload

Didn't know 99% of japan's gold leaf production is done in kanazawa. This Hakuza company store seems popular. Maybe the gold plated room is the cause....

Or the chocolate cake wrapped in gold leaf

For history and culture buffs!
Nov 2016 • Friends
Yasuo (gold leafing) is a traditional craft in Kanazawa. The processes of its creation is presented in printed images with text on the wall adjacent to a small building structure entirely covered in gold leaf. A Japanese guide enthuses visitors with historical/cultural information and details of the structure. Unfortunately, there are no English tours so I suggest a bit of reading before visiting this (free) tourist destination.

Gold leaf experience to remember
Jul 2016 • Couples
We were greeted at the store with a glass of water sprinkled with gold leaf so we knew we were in for a treat! Heading upstairs to a tatame-matted workshop we soon were following our instructor in making some beautiful patterned plates with gold leaf. It is not easy and extremely delicate to work with but at the end we came away feeling very pleased with our efforts. This was a lot of fun and we'd highly recommend this experience.
