Was there on a rainy and cold day but that did not stop me from walking around Takayama and the Municipal Government Hall was free admission, worth the visit.

As a couple of English-speaking Americans, we didn't get a lot out of our visit to this historic site. It is an impressive complex of buildings, but difficult to comprehend. There is a nice garden area.

I expected to have no signs in English and a few items on display but I was plenty surprised. First a lot of items had English translation and signs for some artifacts in English as well. This home and government buildings is well maintained and gives you a good idea how life was lived during the 1600's. All of this... More

Very well maintained and very interesting! It wasn't very busy and the staff is very polite. It's gives you an idea how Japan was years ago and how the municipal government was operated. Unfortunately the most signs are only on Japanese, so you don't really understand what you are looking at exactly.

We found this place late in the day and we're tired from being in our feet. We almost skipped it because the name of the building is so boring, But we are so glad we took the time to go, even my cynical teens! We were delighted to find that high school teenagers and younger are free, so that was... More

We were to tired to go in. The architecture was incredible and we enjoyed that. We actually went back to the market for some more shopping. Looking for a vase!

Very well preserved and well maintained. Definitely worth a visit as you get to see how a really old municipal government building actually looks like and with a bit of imagination, you can imagine how it was run during the Edo era.

昔の市役所です。古い建物の雰囲気はたっぷりです。特に案内はありませんが 休憩もかねて立ち寄ってみてください。 This is the old town hall. Take your shoes off, come feel the atmosphere of Japan You take rest in this old building.

This is my little rant... almost nothing in this museum is translated to English. Shame as the place is beautiful and seems interesting. This is probably a useless review as nobody there can read my comment lol

It is especially worth visiting for locals in takayama, as not much explained in English, and mostly very local information like how takayama town has been developed.
