Semi ruined but full of character

When you see the Gate of the old citadel you can imagine how impressive and strong it was in its heyday. Semi ruined but a small walk in the walls is an interesting experience

The city gate is, of course, a must see. The ruins are charming and provide good photo spots. It is located in the historic center. One can climb the ruins and it is quite fun. Colonia del Sacramento is a small city and walking around the historic center can take from half an hour to hours top (not including visits... More

The puerta and the wall with it's cannon is one the last vestiges of the Portuguese history with Colonia del Sacramento. Good photo opportunities

This well preserved entrance gate to the old district in Colonia, with its moat included, is your introduction to the richness of history and architecture that Colonia holds for its visitors. You seem to travel to the old days of pirates and colonial wars and hence are well equipped to absorb the art and culture that this Unesco World Heritage... More

The gateway to the barrio historico. Sometimes you can see a performer at the gate too. Many people try to get a photo for themselves so be patient if you want to do so.

The stone gate is the entrance to the historic district. It is a good place to start exploring the historic district.

It is the old gate, worth taking a photo of or simply marvelling at. Can't be missed as you're walking around Colonia.

Another part of the historical old city in Colonia. A nice entrance close to the ferry that transports you back in time as you walk along the cobblestone streets of the old town.

An historic place to understood why Colonia del Sacramento is a UNESCO's site! A walking tour of one hour is enough for basic information. Of course, the history is so interesting that you would stay more time specially with a beer: Patricia!

We found this the best spot to take some nice pictures. The gate was the main entrance to the Ciudadela back in the days. There is a nice and well conserved canon by the gate and a walking place alongside the old wall up to the riverside.
