We took the ferry over from Buenos Aires for the day. It's a short one hour ferry ride and then a quick walk to the historic center. You can easily wander around the town and have lunch and make it back to Buenos Aires by the afternoon. We arrived at 10:00 am and left at 4:00 PM and that was... More

This quaint, very historic town offers a pleasant walk from the bus and ferry station, and affords a view into remnants of past colonial development from the first visit of the Portuguese who settled and made a fort there. I loved strolling along tree-covered streets, and particularly enjoyed visiting the old church, and the river's edge.

The Portuguese came first, building streets and houses of stone with pitched rooted. Then, one hundred years later in 1770 came the Spanish who continued the building, with stucco houses of flat rooves and cobble stone streets. It is preserved for history with your pleasure as its sole purpose today.

Built in 1638 by the Portuguese, this fort area has a lot of the walls and bastion still intact along with several cannons. Definitely worth a walking tour.

The historic area of Colonia del Sacramento is quite small and very easy to walk around in. On the day I went, it was a weekday, so there were not as many tourists as I was expecting to be, so it was nice to have some nice photo ops without other tourists in the shots. The area is nice to... More

Maybe I didn't appreciate our tour of this little town because our guide wasn't that good and also one person in our party was having difficulty walking. Some quaint houses, a draw bridge, a church and a lighthouse.

The historic part of Colonia is very small and walkable though we did rent a golf cart near the ferry dock so we could venture beyond the historic center and so that we could see more in the time we had there. I certainly recommend doing that. The historic portion is very scenic and relatively uncrowded (at least when we... More
