The Izmir Archeological Museum is not far from the clock tower and the Konak metro station. It was a little difficult to find at first, but we were glad we persevered. Archaelogical Museum of Izmir is the firs museum in town. Old days Izmir was very important city of Roman Empire. So there are many artifacts in this museum.

The hall of ceramics was a particular highlight, as was the treasure room. And don't miss... More

There is some great stuff here - and excellent explanations in English to accompany it. I was the only visitor on the day I went - but the exhibits made up for the somewhat depressing ambiance of the building!

Probably number 1 among Izmir museums, even if you aren't an archeology buff. The musem isn't too big (two levels), but it offers a good overview of various sites in Izmir area. Modern layout, good lighting, detailed introductionary texts and captions in Turkish and English. Be careful not to miss the "Treasure Room" on the first floor where jewels and... More
