About
The Cultural Heritage Centre established in the year 1994. Is the first of its kind in Africa dedicated towards exploring the rich treasures derived from African Culture. This family business is the result of culmination of hard work, unwavering dedication and knowledge acquired from the forefathers. At the helm of the affairs is the versatile managing director, Mr. Saifuddin Khanbhai, who has a solid knowledge of African Culture and traditions. Culture Heritage Center has acquired iconic status due to the unique structure of the buildings within its compound and having the treasure chest of African art which is keeping African Art alive. The main building is designed to resemble the Uhuru Peak of Kilimanjaro. It also has an impressive array of arts and crafts including unique masks, Verdite carvings and paintings by famous African sculptures. Cultural Heritage now boasts an impressible Art Gallery was build on his vision which was to promote the work of the local artists. The exterior of the Gallery is imp rived by a drum, shield and spear, all major African symbols. The symbols resonate with the role of the Gallery that is to represent, communicate and celebrate Africa's Cultural Heritage. Among its many world famous pieces of Art is a 18 feet family tree which took 20 years to make. People from all over the world also visit Cultural Heritage, for its unrivaled reputation of having the finest Tanzanite stones which are also found in the Mererani hills of Tanzania, best in the world. The interior has three areas (i) History, (ii) Wildlife and (iii) soul. Ethnographic artifacts fill the History area, the wildlife area consists of contemporary paintings and sculptures of the curvatures roaming the African Savanna and the soul area captures Africa's energy allure and essence. The art gallery also has an amphitheatre which often shows on the life of special Tanzanian tribes like the Maasai, Pygmies and Hadzabe. It is also used for conferences. Also offered at the centre are day rooms found on the top of the building. They serve as resting place in the calm environment after a long safari trp. The spa at the Gallery offers a verity of personal care and treatments. The proceeds from the Gallery go to the conservation of elephants in Africa and the main concept of this is anti poaching clearly defined by the sculpture of the large unique beaded elephant. However, other causes such as orphanages, schools and boreholes and well drilling benefit from the proceeds. The centre also has a restaurant, coffee chop, spice centre, beads centre, and flea shop, which offers a variety of artifacts at different prices. Apart from the art the centre vibrated with warm hospitality. Cultural Heritage is visited by tourists from all over the world. It has been honored by visits from distinguished guests and state leaders such as President Bill Clinton, The prince William of Holland and his wife, Former UN secretary Mr. Kofi Annan, and celebrities such as Cindy Crawford. However every visitor who visits Cultural Heritage is treated as a Celebrity.

Impressive Art Collection
Jul 2021
Besides the huge selection of contemporary art they have a very impressive mask exposition and antiques from the Benin Kingdom, which were the most impressive things I ever saw in my life. I strongly recommend you dedicate at least an entire day to visit this place, because the collection is worth seeing.

Definitely worth a visit, not only to buy gifts before leaving Tanzania, but also to see real art displayed from local artists. The building itself is a very special and worth a visit.

Look, don't buy
Jul 2021
The collection of items in the multiple spaces is amazing. Much of what is there is pan-African, not just Tanzanian. The items are of high-quality and the displays are vast. The surprising part is that just about everything is for sale. The pricing is HIGH. These are collector-level pieces, not intended for the average tourist.

I didn't appreciate being placed in front of the "Tanzanite King" for a 10-15 minute lecture on Tanzanite. I really had no interest in purchasing jewelry, especially with stones that ranged from hundreds to thousands of dollars.

The restaurant there was surprisingly good. I had an Indian dish, which worked because the family that runs it is from Bangladesh.

Dear Client, Thank you for your review. As you mention the quality of Art here is incredible. As for the education on Tanzanite if you were not interested then it is not mandatory to listen to the education. The good thing about our price is we have Art ranging from one dollar to thousands of dollars and it is up to you to choose what you can afford. Thank you for the visit and enjoying the whole place without a charge as you said it is an amazing place and as this is not a museum, it is an Art Gallery.

Mixed feelings about this place
Jul 2021
I must confessed when we fist visited this place, we were blown away. We were very impressed with the number of artworks displayed in the art gallery, some of them were exceptional. Some reviewers commented on the price differences between artworks sold here at the art gallery and those sold in the Maasai Market or other similar outlets, there is no comparison. There is no comparison, as the quality of works differs greatly between the art gallery and other local markets.

The mixed feelings came after talking to local people (Arusha residents, Maasai people, tour guides etc) that places like Cultural Heritage Centre exploit local people, pay their employees poorly and with their capital and connections to hotels and other tourist companies have killed local businesses. It is also unclear how much artists are paid from sold pieces.

I would be lying if I said I did not enjoy going through the gallery and admiring the sheer number of works and the quality of some of the works I was able to see there. That itself is worth the trip. I just wish there could be more transparency and support of local economy somehow.

Dear Client, Thank you for your review and we are happy to hear you enjoyed your experience at Cultural Heritage. As for the accusation let me rightfully inform you that our staff are probably the highest paid in the region, for most of the money from the Gallery goes to provide wheel chairs to handicap people, NICU in the hospital, water for the villages and rehabilitation of street kids, so it is very disturbing to read that the people who you refer to are probably not our well wishers and as for the transparency our program of the communities is well documented in our brochure and at the same time we take pride that during the Covid 19 pandemic time we have not reduced a staff and they are on full salary, for this I don not think we can be compared with any in the Industry.

Be porepared to spend a lot of time here!
Jun 2021
There was so much to look at and choose from! We spent a couple of hours there on our last day that was designated for shopping. My 16-year-old son was able to buy reasonably priced jewelry for his friends at home. A great place for souvenir shopping after a safari...

Incredible collection of African art and artifracts
Jun 2021
This Centre is not to be missed when visiting Arusha. The architectural design of the building must compare more than variably with any Gallery in the world. Signage is good and there are knowledgeable staff to assist and guide you. All items, bar a couple, are for sale. The collection of antique African carvings, masks etc is mind boggling. By far my favourite place in Arusha.
