I did not expect this but the Maritime museum is very large and has nice displays and artifacts. Definitely worth a visit.

We accidentally went into the Maritime Museum, thinking it was the same place - but 300 rupees each and about 15 minutes later we discovered we had gone into the wrong museum which is just around the corner. So make sure you visit the Maritime ARCHEOLOGY Museum - the A word makes all the difference. Really good, lots to see,... More

This museum, the starfort structure and some monkeys are my best of Galle fort ;-) The museum is nice and there is an effort to do some storytelling even though the collections are a bit scattered so you tend to walk from thing to thing without really feeling it hold together. However - its a well maintained museum and shouldnt... More

One can get a feast of the Dutch culture of yesteryears and also the way trade was done from the Galle fort in those days

I have been to Galle many times but last time was the first time I noticed the Maritime Archeology Museum. It is a quite spacious museum with lot of artefacts related to marine industry, shipwrecks, ancient Sri Lankan ports. It will not take more than 2-3 hours to completely go through the artefacts in the museum. Tickets would cost only... More

Though I have an interest towards History and Archaeology, I didnt find many good things to see. Their collection was fine, but they could have it improved if given proper attention.

Someone had very unkindly written in the visitors book that there was nothing to see. Close your eyes and your mind and it would be true. My wife and I found it fascinating as apart from anything else, it shows why Galle is so important in the history of Sri Lanka. The history of the shipwrecks illustrates the trading patterns... An interesting collection of artefacts recovered from shipwrecks off the Sri Lankan coast. The introductory video was helpful in explaining the background to the collection and we spent a pleasant couple of hours wandering around the museum. Information boards provided useful descriptions of the various objects.

large museum with lots of space. Relatively expensive. Visit the video room near the entrance as the AC is refreshing. If you enjoy archeology there are plenty of broken pots to look at. There are some interesting exhibits but I would not revisit.

We walked around the walls and the old town and finished here. It taught us about the history of both Sri Lanka and Galle with some interesting artefacts.
