Wonderful very fine sand stretches across a wide light yellow band, approaching the ocean. Wet - it's like a delicate clay - you're walking on another planet. Snow-white foam waves sweep the ocean ashore. You want a powerful but pleasant whirlpool, here you go. When we arrived, young children were frolicking in the waves in the shallows and building sand castles. You can sunbathe right in the wet sand. But you can rent sunbeds and an umbrella. We cost 2,000 rupees per person. There are no locker rooms.

Wonderful trip I had with at bentota srilanka.I went there by train first class from Colombo it is about 2000 Sri Lankan rupees only while the taxi charging approximately 12000 rupees. I was also very much lucky to see the sun set with out clouds, just dipping in the sea. My tuktuk driver Sanjeev (Ph no +94 76 967 9451) is very helpful to me and he guided without greed .
My stay at bentota at kurumba villa is also full of nature and very accommodating staff with swimming pool and other facilities

Bentota Beach is great at this time of year. It's not overcrowded😄 I'd say I usually feel like it's my own private beach. Of course, always pay attention to the waves. Red flags should be taken seriously. Unfortunately, now at the end of April, the time begins when you're not allowed in very often.

Only on public holidays are there many locals in the water. Usually at the edge, as very few can swim.

The sand fleas can be annoying. Staying in the wet sand helps against them.

Season for the western beaches is December to April.

Nice beach. I was there in 2014 and 2024. Not many people. The beach is very large, so no one disturbs anyone and you can quite find completely secluded places. Near the entrance, where the station is waiting for a toilet and shower for money. You can rent sunbeds on the beach. The sunbed guys call a different price every time, so if you like to haggle, haggle.
Swimming is fun. There are waves, but neither big nor scary. Fine. Good for novice surfers. The sand is light, the water is clear.
A lot of people with kids come here.

I recently had a wonderful trip to Bentota, an amazing stretch of beach on Sri Lanka's southern coast. It’s a favourite spot of mine that I visit whenever I can with my family, since it’s just about 1.5 hours from home. Our latest visit was extra special with high tea at Rock Villa Bentota. Bentota Beach truly is a gem, offering a perfect mix of natural beauty and relaxation. The golden sands extend for miles, gently caressed by the Indian Ocean’s waves. It’s a great place for swimming, sunbathing, or enjoying water sports like jet skiing and windsurfing. The sunsets here are simply spectacular, with the sky glowing in shades of orange and pink, creating a magical atmosphere. Whether you're seeking a peaceful escape or some adventure, Bentota Beach has something special for everyone.

Very clean and well maintained beach.
Water is shallow and you can easily venture into it. Good place to surf, if you are interested.
Next to the beach is a washroom area to take a shower and change your clothes, for a nominal fee. Very helpful.
There were some water sports options which we felt was overpriced.
Many restaurants are nearby at walking distance.

At the end of a tour of Sri Lanka, booked via Llama travel, we've had a few extra nights chilling at Cinnamon Bey hotel, Beruwala. Close to Bentota. Really nice. A good relax and enough to do. Went to Merissa for whale watching. Took a mangroves river tour. Cinnamon Bey hotel provided good rooms, food, pool and beach.
We found a brill tuktuk driver, Dilip. He's worth contacting, and will look after you. Will assist to book tours.

I don't recommend this beach. Yes, it’s beautiful, for very young children it’s good to jump on microwaves, but teenagers are a generation old, and where deeper there are currents and waves.
Next - the price for 2 sun loungers and an umbrella is 5000 rupees. In general, this is the only place where they rent out sun loungers for money, and then try to peddle local cuisine. But, the toilet is located 200 meters from the beach, for 30 rupees you are provided with a dirty garbage dump without water and without paper!!! And the local goddess of toilets will not let you in with sand on your slippers and will demand that you wash them in a nearby basin in which there is a lot of sand and a film of fuel oil on top. It’s better to walk around the square and find a tap with water, although the local savages will be passing by with their eyes and filming with their phones.
By the way, there are more locals there than in Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna, it’s just a nightmare. They even try to swim in the water.
It’s so good that my family and I just came to see this famous beach and didn’t live here!
If I return to Sri Lanka, then only to Unawatuna!

Not so many tourists during The week. The beds seems to be free unless there comes a guy offering you drinks. If you buy some drinks from him, another guy comes And asks you to Pay not only for drinks but for The bed too.
